🌾 GRASS SEED SEASON HAS STARTED!
Yesterday I groomed a gorgeous dog who had a grass seed working its way deep between his toes ❤️🩹 It was the first one I've seen this summer, but with the warmer weather and longer grass, I expect there will be plenty more over the coming weeks.
Grass seeds are small, but they can cause surprisingly big problems for dogs. Their pointed, dart-like shape means they can easily attach to fur and then work their way into the skin, particularly between the toes, inside the ears, around the eyes, and in areas with longer coats.
Once a grass seed starts to pe*****te the skin, it doesn't simply fall out. It can continue to migrate deeper into the tissue, causing pain, inflammation, infection, and sometimes the need for veterinary treatment. 🩺
Some common signs to watch for include:
🔍 Excessive licking or chewing at a paw
🔍 Limping or sudden lameness
🔍 Swelling, redness, or a small hole between the toes
🔍 Head shaking or ear irritation
🔍 Sudden squinting or eye discomfort
While regular grooming can't completely prevent grass seed problems, keeping paw fur neat and trimmed can reduce the chances of seeds becoming trapped in the first place. ✂️ But remember to thoroughly check your dog after walks, especially through long grass.
❤️ The good news? Stanley was an absolute superstar and is doing just fine! ❤️
Thankfully, I was able to safely remove the grass seed during his groom before it caused any further problems. I then cleaned the area with some Leucillin pet-safe antiseptic spray, and his owner is keeping a close eye on the paw over the next few days.
In Stanley's case, catching it early meant a quick and straightforward fix... and a veterinary appointment avoided! 😅🎉
It's a great reminder of how important regular checks are during grass seed season. Sometimes spotting a problem early can make all the difference.
