🌾 GRASS SEED SEASON HAS STARTED!

Yesterday I groomed a gorgeous dog who had a grass seed working its way deep between his toes ❤️‍🩹 It was the first one I've seen this summer, but with the warmer weather and longer grass, I expect there will be plenty more over the coming weeks.

Grass seeds are small, but they can cause surprisingly big problems for dogs. Their pointed, dart-like shape means they can easily attach to fur and then work their way into the skin, particularly between the toes, inside the ears, around the eyes, and in areas with longer coats.

Once a grass seed starts to pe*****te the skin, it doesn't simply fall out. It can continue to migrate deeper into the tissue, causing pain, inflammation, infection, and sometimes the need for veterinary treatment. 🩺

Some common signs to watch for include:
🔍 Excessive licking or chewing at a paw
🔍 Limping or sudden lameness
🔍 Swelling, redness, or a small hole between the toes
🔍 Head shaking or ear irritation
🔍 Sudden squinting or eye discomfort

While regular grooming can't completely prevent grass seed problems, keeping paw fur neat and trimmed can reduce the chances of seeds becoming trapped in the first place. ✂️ But remember to thoroughly check your dog after walks, especially through long grass.

❤️ The good news? Stanley was an absolute superstar and is doing just fine! ❤️

Thankfully, I was able to safely remove the grass seed during his groom before it caused any further problems. I then cleaned the area with some Leucillin pet-safe antiseptic spray, and his owner is keeping a close eye on the paw over the next few days.

In Stanley's case, catching it early meant a quick and straightforward fix... and a veterinary appointment avoided! 😅🎉

It's a great reminder of how important regular checks are during grass seed season. Sometimes spotting a problem early can make all the difference.

Want to support a small business this week without spending a penny?🤔

As part of UK Small Business Week, I wanted to share a few simple ways you can make a real difference to the small businesses you love.

I know firsthand just how much referrals and word of mouth matter. Despite all the work that goes into running my business and caring for your pets, some of my favourite clients have found me because somebody took a moment to recommend me.

Comments and shares often have a bigger impact than people realise, helping more people discover a business and the person behind it. But a like is always appreciated too. 🫶

Whether it's your pet sitter, dog walker, groomer, trainer, local café, or favourite independent shop, a few seconds of support can go a long way.

Tag a small business you'd happily recommend below and let's give them a little extra visibility this week.

Born from one pet's love, here for yours. 💜

🐾 Is your pet’s microchip playing hide-and-seek with outdated information? 👀

June is National Microchipping Month, the perfect reminder that a microchip is only as useful as the details linked to it. While many pet owners remember to microchip their pets, it's easy to forget to update contact information after moving house, changing phone numbers, or switching ownership.

Think of a microchip as your pet's permanent ID card, it helps reunite lost pets with their families, but only if the information is current! Taking a few minutes to check your details could make all the difference if your furry friend ever wanders off.

🐶 Fun fact: A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and can last your pet's entire lifetime!

✅ This National Microchipping Month, take 5 minutes to check that your pet's microchip details are up to date. Share this reminder with fellow pet owners and help more pets find their way home if they ever get lost! 🐕🐈💙

☀️ HOT WEATHER DOES NOT MEAN YOUR DOG NEEDS SHAVING SHORT ✂️🐶

A lot of owners believe removing all the fur will help dogs stay cooler in summer, but many coats are naturally designed to help regulate temperature and protect the skin from heat and sun exposure.

🐾 Understanding your dog’s coat is important.

Many breeds, such as Golden Retrievers, Huskies, German Shepherds, Border Collies, and Pomeranians, have what’s called a DOUBLE COAT.

This consists of:
• A soft undercoat that helps regulate body temperature
• Longer outer “guard hairs” that protect the skin and coat

The guard hairs are especially important in warm weather because they:
☀️ Shield the skin from direct sunlight
🌡️ Help regulate heat and airflow
🛡️ Protect against sunburn and skin damage
💨 Allow cooler air to circulate through the coat
💧 Help repel dirt and moisture

When these breeds are shaved too short, the coat loses its natural protective function. This can leave the skin exposed to heat and UV rays and may even make it harder for the dog to regulate body temperature properly.

In some dogs, shaving can also permanently affect how the coat grows back, causing patchiness, coat damage, or changes in texture.

🐕 Double-coated breeds that generally should NOT be shaved short:
• Golden Retrievers
• Huskies
• German Shepherds
• Border Collies
• Labradors
• Pomeranians
• Newfoundlands

For these breeds, regular brushing and de-shedding is usually the safest and most effective way to keep them comfortable during warmer weather.

✂️ However, not all coats are the same.

Breeds such as:
• Poodles
• Cockapoos
• Bichons
• Shih Tzus
• Maltese
• Yorkshire Terriers

have continuously growing hair rather than insulating double coats. These dogs often benefit from regular clipping and shorter trims to help prevent matting and keep them comfortable.

Even with these breeds, leaving some coat length helps protect the skin from sun exposure.

Every dog’s coat is different, so if you’re unsure what’s best for your pet, speak to a professional groomer or vet 🐾

☀️ HOT WEATHER UPDATE ☀️

With temperatures expected to rise this week, we may need to make adjustments to some appointments to ensure every dog stays safe, comfortable and stress-free during their groom.

At The Dog Den, your dog’s welfare always comes first. During warmer weather we closely monitor salon temperatures, reduce dryer use where possible and adapt our routines to help dogs stay cool.

We do have a fully air conditioned salon plus we have a large secure garden where dogs can enjoy regular comfort breaks away from the salon environment. In warmer conditions, we will often allow dogs to dry naturally outside rather than using a blow dryer and we never use drying crates.

If you ever have concerns about your dog in warm weather, please don’t hesitate to contact us, we’re always happy to advise 💚🐾

Thank you as always for your understanding and support.

22/05/2026

For most dogs, brushing a dry coat is better than brushing a wet one, especially if your dog’s coat mats or knots easily.

Here’s why:👇

-Wet hair stretches more and is more fragile, so brushing aggressively when wet can pull painfully or break the coat.
-Mats tighten as they dry. If tangles aren’t removed before bathing, water can make them felt together more firmly.
-Dry coats let you feel and separate tangles more accurately.

For long coated dogs, use a slicker brush followed by a metal comb to check for hidden tangles; brush in small layers, gently holding the hair near the skin to avoid pulling. Loosen mats from the edges inward using short strokes and your fingers first. Focus especially on areas that mat most easily, such as behind the ears, under the harness, around the collar, and near the tail.

Remember - short, regular brushing sessions are much easier and more comfortable than infrequent long ones.✅

If you need any advice or support with brushing, managing your dogs coat or the type of brush you should be using, please speak to us, we are always happy to help 😊🐾

☀️ Warm weather is finally here… but don’t forget our dogs feel the heat too 🐶💛

As temperatures rise this weekend, remember:
🐾 hot pavements can burn paws
🐾 thick coats trap heat quickly
🐾 older dogs and flat-faced breeds struggle faster
🐾 never leave dogs in cars — even for “just a minute”

Keep walks early morning or later evening, provide plenty of fresh water, and make grooming part of your dog’s summer care routine ✂️

A well-maintained coat helps air circulate properly and can make a huge difference in helping dogs stay comfortable during warmer weather.

This weekend isn’t just about enjoying the sunshine…
It’s about protecting the dogs who trust us completely ☀️🐾

🐾 RESCUE DOGS ARE WELCOME AT THE DOG DEN HELPSTON 🐾

🐕 National Rescue Dog Day is observed every year on May 20 as a campaign to encourage people to give shelter dogs another chance at a loving forever home.
Many rescue dogs come with unknown histories, and for some, grooming can feel overwhelming or even frightening at first. A brush, the sound of clippers, being handled by a stranger all these experiences can trigger fear and anxiety when trust hasn’t been built yet. 💛

That’s why patient, gentle grooming matters so much.

At The Dog Den, we understand that rescue dogs often need extra time, kindness, and reassurance during their grooming journey. So the first appointment isn’t about achieving the perfect haircut, it’s simply about helping your dog feel safe.

Trust-building takes time:
✨ Slow introductions
✨ Calm handling
✨ Plenty of reassurance
✨ Working at your dog’s pace

Every positive grooming experience helps build confidence for the future.

If you’ve been worried about taking your rescue dog to the groomers because they’re nervous, reactive, or unsure, please know you’re not alone, and there are groomers who genuinely understand. 🐶

We’re always happy to chat about your dog’s individual needs and help make grooming a calmer, more positive experience for both you and your dog🐾

JUST SOME OF THE GORGEOUS FACES WE’VE HAD IN THE SALON RECENTLY… 🐾

I know everyone loves seeing the dogs at The Dog Den Helpston and honestly, I love sharing them just as much! 💛

From tiny 4-month-old puppies experiencing some of their very first grooms… to big lovable 9-year-old retrievers who know exactly where the treat jar is… one thing they ALL had in common this week?

They all wanted cuddles. 😂🐶

And not saying I have the best job in the world… but I definitely have the best job in the world! Haha 💛

One of the nicest parts of this week was hearing that a client had been using some of the brushing advice I share on social media and it is working for his dog. 💛

And another lovely client even brought me flowers after her dog’s groom, which was such an unexpected kindness. 🌸

I’m not about perfection or “show dog” standards. For me, it’s always about making dogs feel safe, comfortable, loved, and happy while they’re here. And that will always be my number one priority. 💛
