Some days just remind me exactly why I do what I do 🥹🐾

Yesterday, I had the absolute pleasure of spending some hands on time with Kalli, a beautiful rescue girly, under the care of Team Ilbrey K9 Partners.

Having come from an animal rescue background myself, there’s something incredibly special about being able to work directly with dogs who are finding life a little overwhelming. These are the days that bring me the most joy - the days where I feel like I’m making a real difference to a dog who genuinely needs someone to meet them where they are 💚

And that’s exactly what we did with Kalli.

I didn’t go into our session expecting lots of training. She was stressed, excited and understandably a little overwhelmed by everything going on around her.

So instead of asking for lots, we kept things simple.

We played.
We explored.
We worked on a few really basic skills.
We started getting to know each other.

I don't believe in asking a dog for more than they're emotionally ready to give.

I work with the dog in front of me - not the dog I think they should be 🐾

And Kalli? What a gorgeous girl - I'm slightly smitten!😍

There is so much personality in this dog. She is bright, enthusiastic, incredibly affectionate and just absolutely beautiful.

As she settles and we get to know her better, her future plan will include helping her navigate her dog reactivity and finding more appropriate outlets for all that excitement she has around people!

This girly just wants to say hello with 100% enthusiasm!

But yesterday wasn't about fixing anything.

It was simply about saying:

"Hi Kalli. Let's get to know each other" 🥰

And honestly?

What a privilege that was 🙏🏻

I can't wait to see her again! 💚

With the weather FINALLY cooling down, we're venturing back to some of our favourite walks and exploring some new ones too!

The very handsome Buddy came along on a new adventure this week - and it was his first walk with us! 🥰

This super excitable boy didn't take long to get stuck into the important stuff... the sniffs! 😂🐾

A lost cause?

Absolutely not! 😍

When I first met Phoenix, other dogs were A LOT for him!

He was excited, frustrated and just so desperately wanted to get to them!

And in true Shepherd fashion?

Everybody knew about it. Loudly 🤣

Phoenix struggled to:

❌ Engage with his handler around other dogs
❌ Disengage once he'd spotted one
❌ Focus with distractions around him

So when he joined me for a recent 1:1 alongside his Social Dog Club sessions...

He had plenty to show off! 🙌🏻

At the start, he was still very shouty and struggling to disengage.

And that's okay!

We didn't expect him to suddenly be "perfect"..

Instead, we adjusted the distance a little and gave that clever brain of his something to do.

Phoenix LOVES to work!

So we used it! 🤣

And slowly, things started to change...

First, he started disengaging from random dogs out and about.

Not once.

Not twice.

But again and again! 🙌🏻

He could spot another dog, check in with his handler and carry on with what we were doing.

Then we started parallel walking.

And then came the really lovely bit...

Some natural introductions with Tils!

Some were appropriate...

Some... less so...🤣

But that's part of learning!

We changed up the ones that weren't quite right and taught Phoenix what was appropriate.

And before long, he was having a little sniff and then going on his merry way! 🥹

Some really lovely interactions between the dogs - something I love to see during sessions!

That's the goal.

Not a dog who has to ignore every other dog.

And definitely not forcing them to "be friends".

But a dog who can see another dog, stay calm, interact appropriately and politely if they choose to...

And then move on.

If your dog struggles to contain all of their BIG feelings around other dogs...

They are not a lost cause.

Sometimes they just need the right support and somewhere safe to learn 💚

One phrase I hear all the time?

"My dog can do it in class, but not when we try to practise at home!"

A class setting is a great way to learn the how!

Usually, you've got:

✅ A controlled environment
✅ Fewer distractions
✅ Everyone working on similar things
✅ Less going on around you

Perfect for starting to learn new behaviours!

But here's the thing...

Just because your dog can do something in one environment doesn't mean they automatically understand how to do it everywhere else!

A sit in the living room might feel completely different to a sit in the park.

Coming back to you in a quiet training hall is different to coming back when there's another dog nearby.

And that's completely normal! Dogs don't generalise behaviours in the same way we do.

This is where our Social Dog Club comes in!

We help dogs take the skills they've started learning and practise them in more everyday environments, with real world distractions and challenges.

And the best bit? Every dog is working on their own thing.

We have dogs working on:

🐾 Reactivity
🐾 Nervousness
🐾 Over excitement
🐾 Basic puppy skills
🐾 Being able to give behaviours around distractions

No dog is "too much" in our little community 😍

September is pretty much here, which means routines are about to come flying back.

🏫 Kids back to school
📝 Adults back to work
🐶 Dogs back to being home alone?

I KNOW how quickly the summer disappears!

“I'll do that tomorrow” is a sentence I say far more regularly than I'd like to admit 🤣

But here's your little reminder…

We're running out of tomorrows to get your pet care sorted 🙈

Our walking spaces are already full, but we do still have a handful of pop in spaces available.

So if you're sat there thinking:

“Oh sh*t... everyone is going back to work and school next week and the dog is going to be on their own…”

Message us.

Not later.

Not this evening.

Not tomorrow...😂

Now.

A quick message is all it takes to get the ball rolling and, more importantly, get that all important peace of mind before September arrives!

And here's a super easy one that can make ALL the difference in your training!

Pay your dog for engaging with you! 💰🐶

Every time they look at you? Pay them!

Walking along and they look up at you? Pay them!

Off lead and they quickly turn to check where you are?

You know what to do...

PAY UP! 😂

👀 = “Yes!” = Reward!

Why?

Because a dog that regularly checks in with you, is a dog that's engaging with you.

And engagement is a BIG part of training!

If you paid me a fiver every time I looked at you, you bet I'd be checking in with you... A LOT 🤣

“But Lizzy, I don't own shares in treats and my dog's waistline would not appreciate this…”

Don't worry 😂

It's not forever!

Over time, we can taper off the constant payment - but that's a post for another day!

For now, we want to pay up and create real value in checking in with us.

Because an engaged dog is a dog that learns quicker!

Loose lead walking?
Recall?
Focusing around distractions?

All of it requires engagement.

I am SO incredibly unapologetic for this.. 👀

Training shouldn't take away your dog's ability to be a dog!

If you want a dog that does absolutely nothing “wrong”, I'm probably not your trainer.

Because what some people see as “wrong”, I see as a dog just… living.

In a world full of social media perfection, I think it's really easy to forget that this is our dogs first time living this life too.

Sniffing?
Excitement?
Marking?
Rolling around like a complete idiot?

Honestly? These aren't dramas for me.

They're normal dog behaviours.

If I work with a dog that doesn't get a bit excited about things, doesn't want to sniff, doesn't enjoy being outside… I'm looking for the reason why!

Now, sure...

Having your dog tow you down the road because they've caught the scent of last night's fox? Not the one 😂

But the goal of training isn't to eliminate sniffing.

A client told me recently that another trainer had told them to stop their male dog marking on walks.

Why?

He's doing his dog thing.

Our dogs aren't going out of their way to be rude.

They're not trying to be “dominant” - please don't get me started 🤣

They're just doing what they currently know and what comes naturally to them.

It's our job to teach them a different, more appropriate response when we need one.

Or, sometimes, simply teach them HOW to do that behaviour appropriately.

Because training isn't about taking away everything that makes your dog a dog.

Your relationship with your dog matters to me.

Their happiness matters to me.

And neither of those things are something I'm willing to sacrifice just to tick a box that says “perfectly trained”.

My goal will never be a dog who daren't do “dog” things because their training has dictated otherwise.

Training isn't a dictatorship.

It's a partnership. 💚

With how busy it's been recently, I've abandoned our socials a little 🙈

But, despite this, we have had lots of new followers!

So I thought it was probably time for a quick reintroduction! 🙏🏻

I'm Lizzy... the "Teall" in Teall 'n' Tails! 🐾

I'm your local ethical dog trainer and walker, covering Thanet and the surrounding areas, and I travel further afield for training too.

I have a serious soft spot for the big breeds. Bullies and mastiffs, I'm looking at you 👀🤣

And I have a particular interest in dogs who struggle socially or just have BIG feelings 🫶🏻

Thank you all so much for the well wishes for Tilly 💚

After haemorrhagic gastroenteritis and off the scale pancreatitis, she's finally back home and back to her usual waggy, Labrador self.

It was a VERY scary few days.

But it also made me think about something I see all the time…

People offering pet care for a little extra cash, with little or no experience, qualifications, insurance or pet first aid.

And look, I completely understand having a budget.

Especially when your Labrador is adamant vets work on a loyalty scheme 😅

But choosing an experienced, qualified pet care provider isn't just about paying someone to feed your dog and let them out.

Sometimes, it can literally make the difference between spotting something early… and an emergency.

Tilly stays within Team Teall when I'm working away.

That means I know she's being cared for by people I trust, who know her, understand dogs and know what to look for if something isn't right.

And this week, that mattered.

I got a call to say Tilly wasn't quite herself.

She was still waggy, but quieter than normal. She'd been sick, had diarrhoea and her breathing was quicker.

The answer was simple:

"Does she need a vet?"

"Yes."

Within the hour, she was at the vets.

And by the time she arrived, she was going into shock.

It would have been very easy to think:

"It's just a dodgy tummy. Let's monitor her."

But knowing the dog in front of you, recognising subtle changes and knowing which vital signs matter meant we didn't wait.

That confident, quick decision potentially:

🐾 Saved Tilly's life.
🐾 Prevented her condition becoming even more critical.
🐾 And potentially saved me a LOT more money in veterinary treatment.

Professional pet care isn't just earning a bit of extra cash.

It's our job.
It's our passion.
And it's why we constantly update our knowledge and skills.

It's having the expertise to recognise when something isn't right - and the confidence to act quickly, competently and responsibly.

Please bare with me over the next few days 🙏🏻

Our gorgeous Tilly has taken an unexpected trip to the vets this morning and is currently being treated for hemorrhagic gastroenteritis.

She's a poorly girly, having already started going into shock.

We are, of course, all worried sick :(

I will respond to everyone as soon as I can 💚
