Horse beans vary in size, from larger and more visible pieces to much smaller ones. Their impact however is consistent. Size doesn’t determine the level of concern as even the smallest can lead to discomfort or complications if not properly addressed.

This photo shows the size difference I regularly see in beans I remove, some are large and some are pea sized.

This is why regular inspection and professional sheath cleaning are essential parts of proper equine care. Routine maintenance helps prevent buildup, reduces the risk of irritation or infection, and ensures the horse’s overall comfort and wellbeing.

When it comes to bean removal, every piece matters and proactive, professional care makes all the difference.

Super busy couple of weeks coming up, please contact me to secure a booking. Weekend appointments are very limited, booking from mid May. Sooner available through the week or evenings however they are also limited.

With show season quickly approaching, I’d like to just remind people that alongside my main business of sheath cleaning; I also offer clipping (medium blade & covercoat), mane/tail/face tidies and plaiting 💇🏼‍♀️
Sheath cleaning appointments will always take precedence, however with the show season creeping upon us, I thought I would make more people aware of what else I offer!

Spring is the perfect time to get your horse’s sheath cleaned. As the weather warms up and horses become more active, it’s important to make sure they’re comfortable and free from any buildup that could cause irritation, swelling, or behavioural issues. Regular cleaning helps prevent discomfort, improves hygiene, and can even make a noticeable difference in your horse’s movement and attitude.

I’ve included two photos to show the size difference between two beans I’ve removed during sheath cleaning. While they look very different in size, both can cause the same problems - discomfort, restricted movement, and sensitivity. It just goes to show that even smaller accumulations shouldn’t be overlooked!

As always, a huge thank you to all my amazing clients for keeping me so busy — I really do appreciate your continued trust and support!

If you’ve been thinking about booking in, now’s a great time to get it sorted for the season ahead. My diary is open and looking super busy! 🦄

Not a glamorous job, but an important one 🐴

This week I removed a large bean from a horse’s urethral fossa, and it’s a good reminder of why routine gelding hygiene matters.

This horse was showing no signs of having any problems at all, but there is no doubt that this bean would have been causing pain and discomfort for him every day. This shows how important it is to have your horses regularly cleaned and checked by a professional who is trained to find and remove these things.

It might not be pretty, but it’s part of keeping horses healthy and comfortable.

I am booking up super quickly for the remainder of spring. Weekend and evening appointments are very limited. Please get in contact to secure an appointment 📅

⚠️ This all came from one horse’s sheath…

The photo shows the amount of built-up, dirt and sm**ma removed during a sheath clean I performed last week. It might not look like much at first glance, but this type of build-up can cause significant discomfort for a horse if left too long.

What many owners don’t realise is how far up this build-up can sit. To remove it properly, my arm had to go quite far up, which shows just how deep inside the sheath this dirt can collect. This also shows the importance of an arm length glove!

Signs your gelding may need a sheath clean:
• Strong smell
• Swelling or sensitivity
• Rubbing the sheath area
• Difficulty or straining to urinate
• Behaviour changes when ridden

Regular sheath checks and cleaning help keep your horse comfortable, healthy, and free from painful build-ups.

🌿 Spring is one of the busiest times for sheath cleaning, so if your gelding hasn’t been checked recently, it’s best to book in early before the spring rush.

📩 Message me if you’d like to get your horse booked in or if you have any questions.

Sheath Cleaning & Bean Removal, something that often gets overlooked… but really shouldn’t 🦄

These small, firm build-ups (called “beans”) form in the urethral fossa located in the sheath and can cause:
⚠️ Discomfort
⚠️ Difficulty urinating
⚠️ Swelling or irritation
⚠️ Changes in behaviour or performance

Many horses won’t show obvious signs until it becomes a bigger issue. Routine checks and cleaning are key, here is a bean I’ve removed this week.

Spring is one of the busiest times of year, and appointments fill up fast as everyone prepares for increased riding, competitions, and better weather. Pre-spring bookings are now open, please message to secure your appointment.

💬 If you have any questions or are unsure if your horse needs an appointment, drop me a message, I’m happy to help.

Lovely to receive messages like this after one of my visits last week. I removed a lot of build up from this horse as shown in the photo. His owner was completely unaware of the amount hidden up there which no doubt would have been itchy and uncomfortable for him. It just goes to show the difference it can make to a horse, we don’t neglect our hygiene so why should we neglect theirs?
I’m super busy with appointments coming into the spring so please do message me to get booked in, looking forward to helping more horses and ponies feel ready for the summer sunshine🦄🌼🌱

I’m often asked whether mare intimate health cleans are actually necessary.
This bucket and cloth are from a recent appointment — and they say it all 👀

🪣 The discolouration in the water is dirt and grease from around the teats and v***a.
🧼 The debris you can see are flakes of dry skin and grease build-up from between the teats and within the v***al folds.

This is why regular, thorough cleaning is so important — a quick hose down just isn’t enough.

During these cleans, we also:
✔️ Check for any unusual lumps, bumps, or signs of discomfort
✔️ Assess overall skin health
✔️ Check for and remove beans, which can cause significant irritation and problems.

Your mare’s intimate health is just as important as any other part of her care 💕
Please don’t overlook it — get your mare booked in!
