Behind every small home business is so much more than people ever see.
When you run a dog treat business from home, it’s not just “making treats.” It’s early mornings, cleaning down surfaces constantly, checking ingredients, keeping records, packaging orders late at night, learning regulations, worrying if you’re doing everything right, and genuinely caring about every dog that eats your products.
Today we had a visit from Trading Standards for an inspection, and honestly, I think a lot of people hear that and immediately panic or assume the worst. But the reality was completely different.
They weren’t negative at all — in fact, it was a really helpful meeting. They’re not just there to shut small businesses down. They want businesses to thrive, improve, and succeed while making sure standards are being met properly. It was actually reassuring to have guidance and support from people who understand how much work goes into running a business.
I think social media often shows the “pretty” side of small businesses — the cute packaging, fresh stock, happy customer photos — but not the stress, learning curves, paperwork, inspections, or the constant effort happening behind closed doors.
Running a small business from home can feel overwhelming at times, but moments like today reminded me how much I’ve learned and how far this little business has come already 🐾🩷
