Thanks for all the suggestions about how we might make use of the dust and husk we extract from seeds during our SuperClean seed cleaning process.

Just because dust and waste husk doesn't belong in our bird foods, it doesn’t mean they can’t be useful elsewhere.

A number of people suggested using the material on the compost heap or as mulch, so we’re going to give that a go.

We have also contacted a local farmer and they have agreed to add it to their compost and put it back into the land.

These photos help set the scene and show how we’ve been steadily handing over commercial space to nature since we moved here. You can also see how the recent heat and dry weather have affected the plants and grass, something many people will recognise from their own gardens this year.

We’ll see how the compost trial goes and keep you posted. 🌱

In remembrance: Haith’s remembers our friend Bill Oddie.

Everyone at Haith’s is deeply saddened by the passing of our friend Bill Oddie.

Bill worked alongside Haith’s for more than two decades, initially as our resident bird expert and through the creation of Bill Oddie’s Bird Food Recipes. What began as a professional relationship grew into something much more personal. Bill became a true friend of Haith’s, its directors, their families and the wider team.

He brought an extraordinary mixture of knowledge, curiosity, humour and mischief to everything he did. Bill never simply told people the name of a bird. He helped them notice its character, understand its behaviour and feel that the natural world was somewhere they belonged.

Through his work with Haith’s, Bill shared bird-feeding advice, wrote about the wildlife in his own garden, answered questions from bird lovers and helped us encourage more people to look after the birds around their homes, all year round. His name appeared on Haith’s bird food, but his contribution went far beyond the packaging. He brought the food, the birds and the reasons for caring about them to life.

Bill could certainly keep us on our toes. His wit was as quick as his birding knowledge was deep, and few people could make nature feel so accessible, entertaining and important at the same time.
Although Bill had taken a less active public role with Haith’s during the past ten years, our friendship never ended. We remained in contact and continued to send his regular bird-food order. It meant a great deal to us that the relationship endured long after the cameras, events and campaigns became less frequent.

Bill helped generations of people stop, look and listen. He showed that birds were not simply species on a list, but individuals with habits, personalities, dramas and stories unfolding all around us.
He once told us that he thought some birdwatchers considered feeding birds beneath them. Bill never did. He understood that feeding birds could bring people closer to nature, deepen their curiosity and help them care more about the wildlife around them.

Whether he was speaking or writing, he had a way with words, and his humour made birds and their behaviour come vividly to life.

We will remember him with enormous affection and gratitude.

Everyone at Haith’s sends their love and deepest condolences to Bill’s wife, Laura, his daughters and all his family and friends.

Thank you, Bill, for your friendship, your humour and everything you did for birds and the natural world.

You will be greatly missed.

In the weeks and months ahead, we will share some of our wonderful memories of the time we spent with Bill. Today, though, we simply want to say: we’ll miss you, Bill.

From Brazil to Lincolnshire to Elgin. 🇧🇷🐦

It was wonderful to see respected Brazilian exhibition budgerigar breeder Jorge L de Pina and leading UK breeder Chris Snell proudly wearing their Haith’s badges as they attended the Elgin Budgerigar Society following Jorge’s visit to our Bird Food Centre.

Budgerigars have a remarkable way of bringing people together, creating friendships that cross counties, countries and continents. It was a privilege to play a small part in Jorge’s UK tour, and we wish everyone involved every success.

Brazilian Budgerigar Expert Visits Haith’s

Respected Brazilian exhibition budgerigar breeder Jorge De Pina visited Haith’s Bird Food Centre this week as part of his tour of Britain’s exhibition budgerigar community.

The visit was organised by one of Britain’s leading exhibition budgerigar breeders, Chris Snell, who accompanied Jorge on his journey to meet some of the country’s most respected names in the budgerigar fancy. Also joining the visit were Mel Thompson, a highly respected figure within the Scottish exhibition budgerigar fancy, exhibition budgerigar breeders Ian Clarke and Gerry Carr, together with Adrian Richards BEM, Social Secretary of The Budgerigar Society.

The visitors were welcomed by Haith’s directors Simon King and Rachael Haith, alongside members of the management team Gemma Saunders and Andrea Parratt.

The morning began with coffee overlooking Haith’s wildlife pond and the company’s investment in creating space for nature before the group toured the Bird Food Centre to see first-hand how Haith’s bird foods are manufactured.

Jorge is spending time in Britain meeting fellow breeders, exchanging ideas and celebrating the friendships that have developed through a shared passion for exhibition budgerigars. His UK itinerary concludes with a presentation to members of the Elgin Budgerigar Society in Scotland.

One of the highlights of the visit was seeing the care and attention that goes into producing Haith’s SuperClean™ bird seeds.

When asked by Chris Snell what he thought of the factory, Jorge replied:

“I was really impressed. Very impressed. The hygiene is unbelievably good. I’d love to have the same. It was a pleasure to come here and I love the UK.”

During the visit, Adrian Richards BEM accepted Haith’s seed vouchers (4 x 20kg for Chris Snell’s 66 Budgie Mix) that will be presented to category winners at The Budgerigar Society Show in September, continuing Haith’s long-standing support for the exhibition budgerigar community.

Simon King said:

Friendships built around a shared passion for birds often span counties, countries and continents, so it was a privilege to welcome Jorge, Chris, Mel, Ian, Gerry and Adrian to Haith’s. We work hard to produce our SuperClean™ bird seeds, and hearing such positive feedback from a respected international breeder made the visit particularly special. We wish Jorge every success with the remainder of his UK tour and his presentation to the Elgin Budgerigar Society.”

The visit celebrated not only the enduring reputation of Britain’s exhibition budgerigar community but also the international friendships that continue to unite birdkeepers around the world. As Jorge’s visit demonstrated, budgerigars don’t just bring people into the hobby - they bring people together.

🇧🇷 A Special Visit from Brazil

Today we had the pleasure of welcoming respected Brazilian exhibition budgerigar breeder Jorge De Pina to Haith’s as part of his UK tour with leading exhibition budgerigar breeder Chris Snell.

Jorge has travelled to Britain to meet some of the country’s most respected names in the exhibition budgerigar fancy, exchange ideas and celebrate a shared passion for budgerigars. Today, that journey brought him to our Bird Food Centre in Lincolnshire.

After a tour of the factory, plenty of conversation about budgerigars and bird food, and even the chance to pick an actual order for us in the factory, Jorge also found time to sign a Brazil shirt for us - a lovely reminder of a very special visit. 🇧🇷
