Case: Full-Height Grass Crack – Medial Toe Quarter
This horse came to us with a substantial grass crack running the full height of the hoof along the medial toe quarter—a classic case that’s unfortunately becoming more common with the severely dry weather we’ve had lately. ☀️
📚What is a Grass Crack?📚
A grass crack is a vertical split in the hoof wall, starting at the ground surface and moving upward. These cracks often develop due to dry, brittle hoof conditions, imbalanced weight distribution, or prolonged neglect of regular farrier care. They’re typically superficial at first, but when left unmanaged—or if paired with environmental stress—they can extend up toward the coronary band and cause structural instability and even lameness.
🧲 Our Approach to Repairing It:
🔹 After a thorough exam, we relieved pressure points and gave the hoof a careful balance trim.
🔹 We then forged a custom bar shoe at home in the forge to stabilise the hoof capsule and prevent further movement at the crack site.
🔹 Because of the damage to the hoof wall, we had to get creative with nail and clip placement—moving everything to stronger areas of the hoof wall.
🔹 Finally, we applied hoof staples across the crack to support proper growth from the coronary band down, helping the crack knit together and grow out cleanly.
