About Us

Family Dogs Services is a family run business run by married couple Claire & John Denyer since 2015

“Our mission is to help dog owners get their training right first time and help them correct any unpredictable behaviours that occur during their dogs development"

We have always had dogs in our families. We lost our first black Labrador Gemma to old age in 2011. Our second Labrador was

Indy, she was our first working gundog, and she is the reason that we became dog trainers. We now have the pleasure of owning three black Labradors from working lines (Dude, Rose, and Genie)

Although initially we trained our working dogs as a hobby and for the joy of watching our dogs do what they were bred to do, we have, over the years become passionate and committed to dog training and behaviour on many levels, from training gundogs to work in the field and compete, to helping owners live better lives with their pet dogs. We are thrilled to be able to put our passion and knowledge to good use helping owners of varying breeds and issues with their training needs. People are often unprepared for what is required to develop a well mannered, obedient pet, and even when you get everything right, circumstances beyond your control can give rise to challenges. For that reason we decided to learn to teach key skills that your dog should have, provide assistance and advice to enable you to correct any issues you are having and help your dogs become well mannered members of your family. Our focus is to show you, how, through changing your own behaviour and attitude towards your dog, your dogs behaviour and attitude towards you will be rewarding. Our aim is to offer you the skills to develop a well mannered, obedient and respectful dog. We have studied dog training and behaviour since the early 2000's and advanced and further developed our knowledge and skills training alongside Dog Trainer and behaviourist Robert Alleyne, undergoing his instructors course. We have attended dog to dog aggression, and dog to human aggression courses, with the CIDBT (Cambridge Institute of Dog Behaviour and Training) and trained with L*z Graham completing her accredited Pet Gundog Instructors programme with distinction in 2018. We have continued to further expand our knowledge in dog training and behaviour with both online and in person training courses and workshops with 'Training without conflict', 'Serious Dog Business', and 'STSK9'. We have also attended various workshops and seminars including Tellington Ttouch, Zoopharmacognosy, and canine first aid. We continue to train with a diverse number of trainers undertaking courses to further our knowledge and skills whenever possible. John is a level 4 certified True 2 Life International trainer, and a featured expert on the Ladies Working Dog Group .com

Claire is the author of the puppy book 'The Life of Rose' - Raising puppies the family dog services way, also, 'The Life of Rose' - becoming a gundog. Claire is a group expert, and trainer for the Ladies Working Dog Group

I'm home! Back from three intensive and inspiring days in Wales with on the Canine Cognition Instructors course

Having been a spectator, a handler, and a host at 5 Canine Cognition clinics, and John attending the puppy Cognition clinic as a spectator, and the adult Canine Cognition clinic as a handler, we have both developed a desire to understand Canine Cognition on a deeper level, and apply it in our behaviour and gundog work, to help handlers understand their dogs better.

We delved into the inference and memory cognition tests, discussing the theory and doing the practical tests, analysing results and looking at how dogs learn, and problem solve.

Canine Cognition is widely used in selecting dogs for jobs in detection, police work, and other highly skilled disciplines, and we are thrilled to announce that in 2007 we will be able to bring this to our gundog handlers and behaviour case owners, and help them to understand their dogs behaviour, and learning styles, and help dogs learn more effectively.

Thank you to Hollie at Invicta Dogs for being my study buddy over the last few days.

Also lovely to see Emma Liddell and spend a few days with Rose at Top of the Rock Glamping

Day two of the canine cognition instructors course with

Today we looked at the theory and practical elements of the Inference tests.

When Rose completed the canine cognition tests back in 2024 she followed my direction on the pointing task, ignoring the reward, despite knowing exactly where it was, which was a fantastic talking point in how training can affect results. Today she re took the test, and bless her heart we had a similar result, except she ended up coming to me to ask for help on reps 4, 5, and 6 which gave us all the chance to trouble shoot these scenarios.

Don't worry, she is fine, and we've had cuddles tonight

When teaching 'leave' in this manner you are not teaching your puppy or dog to drop something that they already have in their mouth, but to disengage from, or avoid something that has their attention. Think, don't roll in that, don't eat that, don't bark at that, don't focus on that...
