🚨 Equine Influenza Update – Stay Vigilant 🚨

As of 7 May, there have been 44 confirmed equine influenza outbreaks across 28 counties in the UK, with further cases pending. A significant number of these cases are linked to recent horse movement, highlighting the increased risk when travelling during periods of heightened disease activity.

While unvaccinated horses make up the majority of cases, it’s important to note that even vaccinated horses can be affected, and the virus can spread through the air over several kilometres — meaning no yard is completely risk-free.

🌍 What this means for you:
Take a risk-based approach when moving horses
Ensure vaccinations are up to date
Isolate new or returning horses for at least two weeks
Maintain strict biosecurity measures on the yard
Stay alert for symptoms: cough, fever, nasal discharge, loss of appetite

⚠️ There is also increased influenza activity in France, so extra caution is advised when travelling internationally or purchasing horses.

If your horse shows any signs, isolate immediately and contact your vet.

🎓 Equestrian education with clear progression.

From September, students will benefit from a two‑year Equine Studies programme for Year 10, alongside our BTEC Level 3 Equine Management course for Sixth Form, with opportunities to work towards BHS Stage 1 and Stage 2 for some learners.

The Riding Academy were delighted to support this year’s Year 13 Charity Week with our very first Sponsored RideAthon, where Prep School riders and Sixth Form students worked together to complete an impressive 77 laps in one hour in aid of Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). A wonderful example of teamwork, determination and community spirit — and just one highlight of an extraordinary week. 💙

Yesterday, Year 13 student Tabby T ran the London Marathon alongside her dad Jeremy, raising vital funds and awareness for Spinal Research and the British Eventing Support Trust!

As a British Event rider studying Equine Management BTEC at Leweston School, Tabby understands both the passion and the risks involved in a life with horses. Her two chosen charities are very close to her heart: her Mother and Grandmother have both suffered serious falls and spinal injuries, and through her equine sport, Tabby has seen first‑hand how life‑changing spinal injuries can be.
