Hey friends, do you know what makes me so angry, so upset, so frustrated? The sentence “ It’s, meaning a hedgehog, fine, it’s been out for a few days, but now it’s curled up and won’t move”.
NO, IT IS NOT ALRIGHT!!
I must be greeted with this reply to me answering a call, at least every other day. How many times do we have to repeat that you shouldn’t see a hedgehog out in the daytime?
Now don’t start saying “Ah yes, but there are times when you may see a hedgehog out in the day”. Please, do not muddy the waters. On a whole, a hedgehog out in the day is in trouble and if you are not sure, you phone me or another hedgehog rescue.
Sometimes these poor animals end up lying in the middle of someone’s garden in the cold and the pouring rain and then the finders will phone me to say, “ It’s been ok till this morning, trotting about etc”, but when it gets to that stage it’s often too late to save.
Well, that’s my rant for today and I may as well take it out on you than take it out on the person on the other end of the phone who doesn’t realise that nocturnal animals should not be out in the daytime. Joan.

A REMINDER
Remember on Halloween please don't leave pumpkins on the ground as Hedgehogs will eat them......and it will make them very poorly!🤒 🤮

It's that time of year again and we're starting to get lots of questions about hibernation so thought you guys would be interested in this information.

At this time of year hedgehogs start to build up their fat levels in preparation for hibernation. They have two types of fat reserves, white and brown.

White fat is the hedgehog's primary source of energy and is essential to sustain the hedgehog through long periods of torpor when their heart rate, metabolism and body temperature are drastically reduced.

Brown fat is in many ways more important as it provides the necessary energy to allow the hedgehog to rouse from hibernation (or torpor) safely.

Hedgehogs can lose up to 40% of their bodyweight during hibernation and each time they rise from hibernation it uses up valuable fat reserves. So please remember not all hedgehogs hibernate and some rise every few weeks so it's really important that you continue to support feed and provide fresh clean water throughout the winter 🙏🦔🙏

Hey all, I don’t know about you, but I have some leaves falling from some of my trees already, so it’s a great time to remind everyone to let the leaves be, don’t clean them up, or if you feel you need to take a rake to them, or a blower please pop them them into a pile that hedgehogs and other insects can use, or maybe to hibernate in.

Actually did you know it’s great for lawns to actually leave the leaves on them, the worms come up and take the matter down in to the soil in the winter & this helps fertilise your soil.

So you see there are a few reasons why leaving leaves is a good thing not a bad…

Helping us help hedgehogs, wildlife & your lawn!

Lots of love

Very sad news. The hedgehog with the ring around its neck passed away in the night.
On examination I found its wounds were much worse than initially thought. The ring must have been around its neck for many months and was gradually choking the poor creature. At least it died warm, pain free and also free of maggots.
And to the lady who said that I should have taken it to the vets and had it gassed down, (one of my pet hates are people who give advice when it isn’t asked for) to gas down any animal that is that badly wounded would have killed it anyway.
I am upset because of not only the fact that I tried so hard to save this little one, but also of the person who allowed this to happen.
I repeat what I’ve said before,
When God created the world, he made one big mistake, he made man.
