Emergency slip lead for dog owners!

What if your dog’s collar breaks or they lose it while you’re out on a walk?

Here’s the simplest easy temporary workaround using a standard clip lead to create a temporary slip lead. So easy I debating sharing it!

But in all seriousness it’s super simple and might come in useful one day if you find yourself in a pickle if your dog returns to you with no collar on.

Save this for later and share it with a dog owner who might find it useful! Thanks and goodnight.

Before you start trying to fix your dog’s reactive behaviour, ask yourself this: are their needs actually being met? Particularly if they’re expressing strong feelings towards certain triggers, their walks and exposure to the things they need might be reduced.

So before tackling specific reactivity behaviours, I’m always looking at their routine and fulfilment. What does your dog love to do? Sniff, chase, tug, retrieve, search, solve problems? What were they bred to do, what does that individual thrive off and how can you give them appropriate outlets for those instincts in everyday life?

Fulfilment isn’t about exhausting your dog or keeping them constantly entertained. It’s about giving them the right balance of mental and physical activity, opportunities to use their natural instincts, and also time to simply slow down.

And if you’re struggling with reactivity, this is a really important place to start.

It won’t magically fix everything, and it doesn’t replace specific training. But fulfilling what your dog needs mentally and physically is a must before any trigger-specific work.

Don’t just focus on the behaviour you want to change. Look at the bigger picture of your dog’s life.

What does your dog absolutely LOVE doing? I’d love to know. 👇

You could look at social media as a goldmine or minefield for dog training advice. There’s SO much conflicting content and, if you’re trying improve your dogs behaviour, I get can be totally confusing.

If you’re going to take on tips and advice obviously check your sources properly, but I’d like to address the need for tailoring advice and approaches for each dog as an individual. Breed and character differences, as well as life experiences, massively influence the varied ways dogs learn, and that’s my takeaway from this reel. Tailor your training for your dog. What makes them tick, what turns them off, what triggers them or what encourages them. Changes of approach and tone, changes of the practicalities you train them with. Different rewards. It all has to meet your dog’s needs - not Alpha the Malinois from episode 32 of ‘my dog is a legend yours isn’t’.

My next puppy course starts on the 5th September in Tooting, South London.

6 puppies, 6 weeks. Covering basic obedience, yes, but so much more that I consider fundamental to ensure puppies grow into calm and confident adult dogs - how to understand dog body language, what balanced socialisation looks like, formal handling, settling, getting used to distractions, recall, loose lead work. There’s a big list.

So if you’ve welcomed a new puppy into your life, congrats, and I’d love to help you set you and your puppies up for a great life together!
