Han's Pet Care

Han's Pet Care I'm a 26 year old History and Music graduate, who has decided to make a career out of what I love most - looking after animals.

I've always loved animals, and have studied dog psychology. I believe that first and foremost, animals need love.

Now the hot weather has apparently decided to arrive it’s a good time to remind dog owners of the very important tarmac test!

Making sure your dog doesn’t burn their little feet on the hot ground is (obviously) very important. Luckily, the test to see if it’s too hot outside for a walk is super easy.

All you have to do is use the back of your hand and put it on the pavement for 5 seconds. If it hurts, it’s too hot. If not, your dog will be able to walk without having sore feet later. Win-win!

To avoid the hottest times of the day, early morning or evening walks are great in the summer! Please do reach out if you need dog walking services

Stay safe and hydrated out there 🐾🐾🐶

I just finished this book. It was a fantastic read and I’d recommend it to anyone who loves hearing about rehabilitation of not only dogs but humans too. Truly inspiring for those who adore animals.

It definitely holds some important lessons on patience and on understanding the ranges of emotions dogs can feel.

Dogs have an extra layer of fur that acts as insulation. However, through domestication and breeding, various dog breeds have different coat thicknesses, lengths and textures. All of these factors means that whether or not you should buy your little pet a Christmas jumper is dependant on the breed.

Pippin, the miniature schnauzer in the photo below has a short coat, and shivers when he gets too cold. He loves his little jumper and it keeps him cosy in the cold weather ❄️

Dogs like to sleep next to you not only due to their pack instincts, but also because it makes them feel comforted and loved! It helps reduce stress, and reinforces their sense of security. Interestingly, in all of these ways, its mutually beneficial

Dogs can watch TV! There’s a lot of preconceptions about dogs being able to watch TV due to their colour perception being different to that of a human (more on that later). They process movement and sounds very differently to us. Essentially, they can see what we see but their interpretation is definitely different to ours. That doesn’t stop many dogs enjoying watching tv, as one of my doggy clients is pictured doing below

A dog’s yawn has a lot of different meanings. While yawns between humans and dogs can still be contagious, meaning if you’ve just yawned, they may too, their yawn can also be telling you a lot about how they feel.

They’re often used as a way of self soothing in times where they may feel anxious, as well as something they may do while playing alongside sneezing to let you know they’re just playing and don’t actually intend you harm.

It’s always good to be able to read your dog’s body language. They communicate with us in a language we have to learn. Better knowing the ‘why’ behind a lot of your dogs behaviour not only helps you understand them better, but in doing so deepens the bond we and they feel.

Did you know:

In breeds where dogs have long floppy ears, for example bloodhounds and spaniels, one of the functions they serve is to act as funnels to aid the dog’s sense of smell and collect scent particles and direct them towards the nose. This is also why most dog breeds known for their sense of smell will also have wrinkles as it helps collect and store the scents!
