🐾 WHAT STARTED AS A RESCUE FOR MUM & TWO KITTENS TURNED INTO A VERY STRANGE MYSTERY… 🐾
Last night, RRATS Cats Rescue was alerted to a mum cat and two kittens believed to be living at the back of a shed in someone’s garden.
So at 11am this morning, myself, Sam and Gita set off, arriving at around 11:30am.
And that’s when the strangest adventure began… 😳
The shed was absolutely PACKED from front to back with belongings, and the cats were somewhere right at the back. We cleared enough space to get a trap inside and settled down to wait.
Around 20 minutes later, we suddenly heard it.
MEEEEEEOWWWWWWW! 📢🐱
Not just a little kitten squeak. This was an unbelievably loud, desperate meow coming from inside the shed.
The residents told us that this crying had only started within the previous 24 hours. Before that, they hadn’t even realised cats were living in their shed.
I opened the shed to investigate and found the tiniest little kitten, estimated to be only around 2–3 weeks old, screaming his tiny lungs out.
We quickly got him out, wrapped him up and made him safe and warm in a carrier.
We then went back to waiting for Mum and the other kittens to enter the trap.
And waited…
And waited…
Nothing.
Eventually we realised we were going to have to do this the hard way.
The shed had to come out. 😬
As we started carefully emptying it, we found not two kittens…
…but THREE more kittens.
And immediately, something didn’t add up.
These kittens were MUCH bigger than the tiny baby we’d already found. From looking at them, we were convinced we were dealing with two completely different litters.
Cue a frantic game of feral-kitten hide-and-seek while we continued dismantling half the contents of the shed. 🤦♀️😂
Eventually, after a LOT of searching, manoeuvring and determination, we managed to safely catch all three.
Then we found Mum hiding right in the corner.
Thankfully, Gita and her lightning-fast reflexes — plus a very important pair of bite-proof gloves 😂 — managed to catch her, and Gita and Lucy safely got Mum into a carrier.
But we weren’t finished.
With such a huge age difference between the kittens, there was absolutely no way we were leaving until we were 100% certain there wasn’t another kitten hidden somewhere.
So we emptied and searched the rest of the shed.
Nothing.
Mum.
Three older kittens.
And one completely mysterious tiny baby.
🤔 SO… WHERE ON EARTH DID LITTLE MAC COME FROM? 🤔
We took everyone straight to Vets4Pets Charlton, where the amazing vet examined them.
And she confirmed what we’d suspected:
These kittens are 100% NOT all from the same litter.
The three older kittens are approximately 7–8 weeks old, while the tiny baby is approximately 2–3 weeks old — roughly five weeks difference. The tiny kitten was dehydrated and had some subcutaneous fluids at the vets and some much needed milk.
The residents had only ever seen one mum cat and two kittens. Nobody knew about the others, and nobody locally that we’re aware of has a mum with young kittens or a kitten of this age missing.
So we have a little mystery on our hands.
Our best theory?
Perhaps Mum went out and somehow came across this tiny kitten — abandoned, lost or separated from his own mother — and her maternal instincts kicked in.
Maybe she picked him up and carried him back to the safety of her nest with her own babies.
We’ll probably never know.
What we DO know is that she doesn’t appear to have been feeding him. When we found him, he was extremely thirsty, hungry and dehydrated, and the residents only became aware of the cats because his enormous voice suddenly started echoing from the shed the night before.
And believe us when we say this kitten has some LUNGS. 😂
So we’ve named him…
🚛 LITTLE MAC! 🚛
Because for something so ridiculously tiny, he sounds like a little Mack truck coming through! 😂❤️
❤️ BUT THERE’S ANOTHER PART TO THIS STORY… ❤️
The truth is, RRATS Cats Rescue had already closed our doors around 8, 9, 10… actually, about ELEVEN cats ago.
We didn’t have space for these babies.
We are full.
Not nearly full. Not getting full.
FULL.
We’ve already stretched our foster spaces further than we ever intended. Every time another cat comes through our doors, we have to work out where they’re going to sleep, who can take them, what equipment we can move around and somehow find another tiny bit of space that simply wasn’t there before.
We had already said:
“We cannot take any more.”
And then today happened.
We stood there looking at a terrified mum, three frightened little feral kittens and a tiny 2–3-week-old baby who was dehydrated, starving and screaming his little lungs out.
And suddenly those words — “we don’t have space” — become incredibly difficult to say.
Because how do you?
How do you hold Little Mac in your hands, feel how tiny he is, hear him screaming because he’s hungry and thirsty, and say:
“Sorry, little one. We’re full.”
How do you look at three terrified kittens, covered in fleas, hissing and spitting because humans are completely unknown to them, and decide they don’t get help because there isn’t a spare crate?
How do you catch their frightened mum and then leave her behind because you’ve already reached your limit?
We couldn’t.
We simply couldn’t. 💔
So we did what rescue makes you do time and time again.
We moved things around.
We rearranged.
We squeezed.
We worked out who could go where.
And somehow, we made space where there wasn’t any.
Because sometimes “we’re full” and “they need us” collide.
And when the lives sitting in front of you are this small, this vulnerable and have absolutely nobody else…
you find a way.
We didn’t have space for five more cats today.
So we made space for five more cats. ❤️
Little Mac didn’t know our doors were closed.
Those three frightened kittens didn’t know we’d already gone around eleven cats beyond the point where we’d said enough.
Mum didn’t know we had nowhere prepared for her.
They just knew they needed somebody.
And today, that somebody was us. 🐾❤️
After around 7 hours of rescuing, vets, getting supplies, feeding kittens, bathing kittens and dealing with an unbelievable number of fleas, everyone is finally safe.
All four kittens were absolutely crawling with fleas, so they’ve had much-needed baths, and Mum has been flea treated.
The three older kittens are currently very feral — plenty of hissing, growling and spitting! 🌶️😂 — but they’re now safely settled with a foster, alongside Mum, where they’ll begin learning that humans aren’t quite as terrifying as they currently think.
We’ve nicknamed the three little spicy ones:
🐾 Poppet
🔥 Spitfire
🌶️ Sassafras
And then there’s our tiny mystery passenger…

Because of his age and condition, we’ve made the decision to separate Little Mac from Mum and the older kittens. He has gone home with a hand rear foster, where he will be hand-reared and given all the feeds, warmth and care a baby of his age needs.
Meanwhile, the other foster has taken Mum and her three 7–8-week-old kittens home together.
Tonight, instead of hiding at the back of an overflowing shed, five cats are safe. ❤️
It was a long, exhausting and very unexpected rescue, but absolutely worth every minute.
A huge thank you to all the volunteers who made today possible to the residents for allowing us to completely invade and empty their shed 😂, and to the wonderful vet at Vets4Pets Charlton for seeing and checking everyone over.
Now the work of socialising, rehabilitating and caring for this little family begins.
And as for the mystery of how a tiny 2–3-week-old kitten ended up tucked away with a completely different litter five weeks older than him…
We may never know.
But one thing’s certain:
Little Mac made sure somebody found him. 📢🐱❤️
And despite our doors already being closed…
we’re very glad he did.

We now have Mum, three older kittens and tiny Little Mac relying on RRATS Cats Rescue for everything they need.
There will be food, litter, flea treatment, veterinary care, supplies for Mum and the older babies, and everything needed to hand-rear Little Mac while he is still far too young to fend for himself.
And remember — we had already closed our doors around ELEVEN cats ago.
Every extra cat we take in adds another mouth to feed and another little life that we have promised to care for until they’re ready for their next chapter.
Today we couldn’t look at these five and say “no.”
So now we’re asking our amazing community to help us say “yes.” ❤️
