I hear “They’re just a puppy!” all the time when a pup rushes my dogs or ignores their owner. I get it—they’re learning! But remember: What you permit, you promote.

As a trainer, I see so many owners give their puppies “too much, too soon.” Giving a puppy total off-lead freedom before they have the foundations of recall is like asking a toddler to navigate a busy city alone—it’s a lot of responsibility!

Setting them up for success looks like:

Management: Using a long line so they can explore safely without practicing “self-rewarding” behaviors (like ignoring you to go play).

Engagement/motivation: So they are motivated to come back to you even around distractions.

Respecting Space: Teaching your pup that they can’t greet every dog or person they see.

The goal isn’t to be a “fun killer”—it’s to ensure your puppy grows into a confident, reliable adult dog who can actually enjoy more freedom later in life because they have the skills to handle it.

If you’re struggling with those early months, don’t wait for them to “grow out of it”—they won’t! Let’s get to work instead. 🫶

Start 2026 on the Right Paw! 🦴

Welcome to 2026!🤩 I hope your holidays were filled with treats and walks. I am now back to work and ready to help you and your dogs reach your full potential this year.😁

Coming into a new year, we often set goals for ourselves—but what about our four-legged friends?

For my regulars: I can’t wait to pick up where we left off!

For new owners: If you brought home a new addition over the holidays, now is the perfect time to start building that essential bond and get started with their training.

My personal goal this year involve some new things for the business and my own dog, Balto. Since he’s stepped back from agility due to leg issues, I would like to try some scent training with him. It’s a reminder that even when plans change, there is always a way to keep our dogs' minds sharp and happy.😊

What are your 2026 dog resolutions? Loose lead walking? Better recall? Or maybe just starting basic puppy manners? Let me know how I can help you get there! 🐾

2025✨

A year of highs and lows. I started the year losing my first ever dog, Jenna, at 15 yrs old (a dog who had been in my life longer than not❤️) and found out that Balto has cruciate ligament disease, changing our training goals for the year slightly. But it has also been a year that Balto has improved in different areas and where Rae Canine has grown. I have gained some amazing new clients and I just want to say thank you for trusting me with you dogs, and putting in the hard work and consistency with training. I appreciate you all! 🫶

Here are 5 common mistakes I see dog owners make🐾

1. Dog’s thrive off structure and boundaries. If you give your dog responsibility for everything, they are going to struggle in certain situations and not understand what they can or can’t do. For example, giving full freedom to a puppy where they have the opportunity to steal and chew things you don’t want them to.

2. Dog training takes time, consistency and patience. It isn’t ever a quick fix as you want to teach the dog what to do and how to behave, generalizing the behaviour in different situations and environments. It also takes time to change their emotional response and behaviour. Don’t rush it!

3. It is so important to consider a variety of factors that can contribute to your dog’s behaviour. For example, your dog’s genetic needs, diet, health and wellbeing, physical and mental stimulation, rest, relationship etc. Changing your dog’s behaviour and training isn’t just about the behaviour you may see in front of you (Such as barking at other dogs), but so so much more.

4. Dog socialisation is all about building your dog’s confidence whilst also building neutrality and teaching them to co-exist, creating a good balance. It is also not just about exposure to dogs and people, but noises, objects, other animals etc.

5. You can’t expect your dog to perfect a solid heel or recall if you haven’t built the foundations. Building a clear communication system is so important, building on their engagement and motivation so they want to work with you and learn whilst making sure all their needs are met in other areas.

🛑 The Power of a Solid Recall: It’s Not Just About Safety

Recall—getting your dog to come back to you immediately—is hands-down the most crucial thing you can teach your dog.
It’s the ultimate control you have in any situation. A solid recall is what stops your dog from:

🏃‍♀️ Running across a busy road into traffic.
🌳 Getting lost while exploring.
🚨 Accidentally getting into a fight or having a bad experience with another dog or person.
🐕‍🦺 Ruining someone else's walk! (Remember, not all dogs or people want an unfamiliar dog rushing up to them—that’s just good etiquette.)

Here I was taking a video of the dogs and suddenly noticed an off lead dog approaching- In the video, I am with Balto and a 12-week-old puppy. Balto values his space (and honestly, who doesn't?), and the puppy is in a critical stage of socialisation. I need to guarantee they both have good experiences to build the puppy's confidence and respect Balto's boundaries and advocate for him.

So, when this off-leash dog named "Charlie" ignores his owner and comes over, here's what I did:

I immediately call the puppy back and redirect his attention towards me and the food reward (motivation we’ve built is super helpful and important!).
I step in and block Charlie from getting too close to either of my dogs.
Balto creates space (not something he would have done before and has taken lots training and hard work!), and I recall him safely away so I can block and advocate for him from the other dog.

Meanwhile, Charlie's owner is walking on the other side of the field, repeatedly calling his name which the dog is clearly ignoring.

Here's the takeaway: It doesn't matter if Charlie is "friendly." If your dog approaches mine, you are compromising my dogs’ safety and training. There’s always a risk that a “friendly” dog won’t be friendly with my dog or someone else's and they may not want your dog approaching.

Ask yourself: Does your dog have a solid recall? Can you get your dog to turn away from another dog, person, or distraction?
If the answer is no, you owe it to your dog, yourself and others to start recall training. Book a session with a trainer—let's make all your walks more relaxing and enjoyable!

What is hand feeding?

Hand feeding is using your dogs daily food allowance as rewards to train and work for, instead of just getting it for free in a bowl.

Why can this be beneficial?

•Your dog has to work for all their food, pairing it with training to build motivation and engagement, as you become the food source
• You can use the daily food to reinforce good choices and wanted behaviours!
•You save lots of pennies buying extra treats
•You are able to manage your dog’s weight more easily

And don’t get me wrong, sometimes I still feed my dogs food in a bowl if I’m super busy and that isn’t the end of the world, or even use the food to scatter and allow my dog to scavenge and forage, tapping into natural instincts and scent games.

But what I’m trying to say here is that getting your dog working for their food can be super beneficial for multiple different reasons, helping to build their food drive, motivation and get them working for it. 🐾

Why did I ask my dog to do an emergency down here? 🐕❗️

I asked my dog to do an emergency down here as I couldn't see over the hill. As a dog owner I want to provide safety for my dog and also others. For all I know, over that hill, there could have been another dog, a person, a person who is afraid of dogs, a bike or even a horse rider (As there are sometimes horses walked in this park). I didn't want him to startle anyone or run into something etc. And so I asked Balto to down until I reached the top. Once I could see what there was over the hill I was able to release him to run around again. I practice this sometimes at random times and it is a great behaviour to teach for walks!

Whether you walk past blind corners, or if there was a bike approaching (sometimes recalling your dog could get them to run in the way of the bike so sometimes an emergency down is a better alternative) etc!

Does your dog know how to do an emergency down?
