Dogs need 1-2 ml of water per kilogram of mass per hour. Many factors should be considered when calculating the amount of water your dog should drink eg. Activity, temperature, general diet (wet or dry), reproductive status etc.
It’s hard to monitor exactly how much water your dog is drinking so,
Here are some tips on how to ensure your dog stays hydrated throughout the day
1. Fruit bobbing - put some fruit into the water bowl (you could crush them a little to make it easier for your dog). This will keep your dog entertained as provide chances for a drink.
2. Feed veggies and fruit as treats - they contain (on average) 70-95% water.
3. When going for a walk try to walk in the shaded area. This could be under trees if you are in a park or certain sides of the street when you are walking in town. This will feel good for both you and your dog.
4. Play sniffing games - hide treats or toys around and let your dog sniff them out. You could drag a treat lightly along the ground to create a scent path. Sniffing stimulates the brain and is great for your pups well eating. 20 min sniffing is equivalent to 1 hour of walking.
5. Let your dog play in water to cool down, this gives them another drinking opportunity. Be careful in natural bodies of water as they can be dangerous. Be cautious of blue green algae which may grow at this time of year, it’s toxic to dogs!
