Hyperthyroidism is a disease of the endocrine system, affecting humans and other animal species. In general, endocrine disorders have been on the rise due to inferior diets, processed food, and chemicals in the environment. It is rare in dogs but is becoming more common in cats.

The signs of hyperthyroidism vary depending on the stage of the disease and how long the glands have been overactive. This list includes some of the early signs. For more head over to my blog post "Feline Hyperthyroidism" on DrJudyMorgan.com

Dogs can eat most vegetables, with a few exceptions (🧅 🫑 🍆)

If you feed a raw or cooked diet, veggies should make up 15-30% of your dogs total diet, with half of that being from leafy greens 🥬

For dogs eating kibble, adding fresh veggies is still important! 🌟 I recommend feeding 15-20% with more leafy greens than starchy veggies as kibble already contains a high amount of sugary veggies.

If You Feed Your Cat Kibble, Now Is the Time to Switch ❗

Cats are biologically designed to get most of their hydration from food. 💧 That’s why your cat’s water bowl often looks untouched – they simply don’t have the strong thirst drive that other species do. 🐈

Ultraprocessed kibble is far from optimal feline-specific nutrition. 👎 It’s high in carbs and lacks the high-quality protein and moisture your cat needs. Overtime, it can harm your cat’s health. 😿

What should your cat be eating? A low-carb, fresh meat-based diet. 🐱✅ Continue reading in our latest article, linked below.

A WORD ABOUT WAGS
Contrary to popular belief, a wagging tail doesn’t always mean a dog is happy.

Dogs communicate through so many different types of body language, but the wag and the tail position are probably one of the easier to notice.
As with most things it depends on the individual dog. Some breeds naturally carry their tails in a different position and some breeds wag their tails differently to others.

Wags and tail positions should always be looked at in context and together with the rest of the body language. Body language should always be looked at as a “video” and not as an isolated “picture”.

Noticing how your dog’s tail usually looks or how the tail behaves when they’re happy to see you or relaxed and contented, provides a good base line to interpret other types of tail language.

I often watch my dogs’ tails with fascination as they stalk or hunt for something, bark at something outside or see another dog approaching while out walking.

The type of wag and position of their tails gives me so much information about their emotional state.

I have definitely noticed wags to the right in my own dogs when they are happy and wags to the left when there is arousal, uncertainty, predatory behaviour or other types of emotional states.

Not only is the tail an important method of communication but it also plays a role in balance, counterbalancing, stability and general movement when a dog changes direction suddenly.

I believe that tail docking destroys an essential part of a dog's ability to communicate with other dogs by creating a distinct social disadvantage or misunderstanding as tail signals can’t be read.

People with working dogs believe that tail docking is necessary to prevent tail injuries or improve performance, but many countries have banned this practice either completely or only under specific medical circumstances.

Start taking notice of what your dog is doing with their tail - you may find it interesting and it may open up a new way of understanding how your dog is feeling.

In 1902, photographer Horace Warner captured a quiet moment on a street in Spitalfields, East London. A young girl, barefoot and wrapped in a dress far too big for her, sits on a doorstep cradling a cat. Her face is still, her eyes distant—but in her small hands, the animal rests peacefully.
It’s a simple image. But look again, and it becomes extraordinary.
Warner wasn’t like other photographers of the time. He didn’t exploit poverty—he revealed humanity. A Quaker and philanthropist, he documented children in one of London’s poorest districts not to shock, but to stir compassion. His series, Spitalfields Nippers, gave dignity to the forgotten—showing their resilience, grace, and in this case… their tenderness.
The little girl’s name is lost to history. But her gesture remains. In a world that gave her almost nothing, she gave love. The cat—perhaps her only constant—was her comfort, her warmth, her moment of peace.
More than a century later, the photo still speaks. Of poverty, yes—but more importantly, of the quiet power of empathy and the strength found in the smallest connections.

Research shows a cat's purr can heal bones and promote tissue repair:

Cats may purr when snuggled in your lap, but the soothing rumble isn’t just a signal of happiness.

Research suggests that the vibration is produced by muscles within the larynx, which dilate and constrict the glottis as the cat breathes. This results in a sound with frequencies ranging from 20Hz to 150Hz — known to correspond with therapeutic healing frequencies for bones and tissues in humans. Studies find that bones respond to the pressure of a cat's purr by hardening.
In fact, cats often purr in stressful situations, during recovery, or even when facing death, hinting that the purr may function as a form of self-soothing or physical rejuvenation.

Behavioral experts, such as Marjan Debevere and Gary Weitzman, highlight the varied meanings behind a purr. Cats might purr to express nervousness, communicate with other cats, or simply as a way to encourage humans to feed them.

As researchers continue to study feline communication, one thing is clear: the purr is more than just a simple expression — it’s a biological marvel that deepens our understanding of the bond between cats and their humans.
