⚠️BALCONY & WINDOW SAFETY 4 CATS⚠️

Yesterday, a vets who is a friend of mine received a frantic call. What they walked into was absolutely devastating, heartbreaking & entirely preventable.

A cat had fallen from a 6th floor balcony in London 😢

The male cat was unneutered & sadly with raging hormones driving him to seek out females, his instinct to get outside had intensified. Despite his owner claiming the balcony had been made safe, this was sadly not the case.

The vets arrived on the scene & rushed him back immediately, but the poor boy had suffered catastrophic injuries — a broken spine, a smashed skull & severe internal trauma beyond any veterinary intervention.

Another precious life lost 💔 this is exactly why a pet's safety must always come first, above & before any desire to open a window or door in the summer. If you cannot ensure potential escape routes are completely secure, use an air cooler or a fan instead.

You can never be too careful when it comes to cats living in flats or apartments. I have successfully homed cats into first & second-floor homes, but have always insisted that all windows & balconies are fully secured before hand. I always recommend specialists such as FlatCats & give this advice to ensure mandatory safety measures are in place & it's safe for a new family member.

Yes, I can be strict — but I am strict for a reason.

I simply cannot understand how any cat could be allowed access to a 6th floor balcony without complete, professional-level protection. Cats are curious. Cats jump. Cats climb. Animals require just as much (if not more) protection than children in situations like this.

Do not assume your cat “would never jump.”

Cats can & do fall from first, second, third, fourth floors & beyond. If they are unneutered, hormones can make that urge to roam even stronger & this is why mine also leave neutered, so they never have these raging hormones & it also keeps them protected 👍

Also take into account the V type windows that open inwards because again, cats have died being stuck in those because they fall down into the V & sadly can't excape & die painfully, so always have window screens & have the balcony protected correctly for their own safety.

The take-home message here is:
✅ Neuter your cats
✅ Secure windows properly
✅ Cat-proof balconies completely
✅ Never underestimate curiosity or instinct
