Sometimes it’s not just the dogs that get training - this time it was me! After being put through my paces, i’m buzzing to have qualified as a Paddlesport Leader with an accreditation from Paddle Scotland 🥳🛶

Yes! Well, some do.

Just like humans, dogs can experience motion sickness - especially when experiencing new sensations such as being on the water.

Luckily however, it’s not all that common, and most dogs take to the board like champs! To help prevent it though, we recommend:

💧 Start with short sessions on still water
🐶 Let them go at their own pace during training
🍗 Avoid big meals or new foods before paddling!

Can my pug paddleboard? 🐶

Dogs known as ‘brachycephalic’ breeds, dogs such as Pugs and French bulldogs have shortened snouts and a flat face appearance. While this trait is what makes the breeds popular with some, it can make breathing, staying a float and swimming particularly difficult for them.

Safety is always our first priority, so we seriously don’t recommend training your dog for paddlesports if it falls in to this category.

We work with dogs of all breeds, ages and sizes, with custom programmes that help you have fun, bond, all while staying safe. There are unfortunately no Buoyancy Aid or Swim aid adaptations available that can ensure the safety of Dogs of these type when out on the water. .

If you have a large boat or yacht and wish to ensure your frenchie floats if the worst was to happen, given the stable nature of large boats there is low risk in calm conditions - check out these guys ready to head back to their boat!

Considering taking your dog out on your kayak or paddleboard with you? Then you need to make sure you have recall down!

When out on the water, leashes can snag and cause hazards. To minimise risk, ensure your dog will stay on the board before you safely attach a lead when pulling up to shore in remote and unfamiliar areas.

If your dog is off-lead when offshore, reliable recall is required to ensure your dog does not worry livestock, run off in an unknown area, or run up to persons/dogs in the area - and gives you peace of mind to enjoy your experience on the water with them!

A good level of obedience and reliable recall can make entering and exiting the water with your dog smooth and seamless.

Paddleboarding has been growing in popularity over recent years, and particularly since Lockdown.

Why is this? Well…

-It’s accessible to all ages and abilities
-It takes minimal storage with a lot of boards being inflatable
-For a lot of Scots there’s places to paddle right on their doorstep

And a big plus in our opinion… you can even share it with your best [furry] friend 🐶

We’re lucky in Scotland to have the right to roam, and in turn have access to some gorgeous lochs, rivers, canals and coastlines to get out on the water. If you fancy giving it a go, and particularly with your dog in toe, drop us a message! We operate all over Scotland and the UK.

Another excellent session yesterday at Castle Semple Loch !

Our group of dogs ranged from experienced paddlers to first timers, but in just a couple of hours all of them were jumping up on the board with ease, and even getting out on the water.

We started off on land building positive association with the board, before working on balance skills and eventually taking the next big step up to get the dogs on the board at the shoreline!

Check out Pip - he likes to claim the dry bag at the back of the board as his personal nap spot while drifting along! But as always - safety first, so we had to be a bit clever to create some adaptations for him!

I’ve learned that some dogs naturally find their favourite spots when we’re out on the water. When appropriate I embrace this instinct as can enhance the experience for both dog and owner.

This creative adaptation can be securely fastened through the drain holes on a sit on top kayak or to a paddleboard using a strap. It gives Pip his own designed space with protective sides, allowing him to sit, stand and turnaround. Most importantly, it ensures comfort and safety during his waterborne snoozes.

We talk a lot about R.A.F.T and appropriate vessels during our sessions, but this can also include adaptations to suit your own dog’s behaviour and preferences.
