Milk production across the UK and Europe has reached record seasonal highs, with March volumes up 3.5% year-on-year and cumulative supplies running 4.6% ahead of last year.

While peak milk production has now passed, creating a more positive outlook for the second half of the year, dairy commodity markets remain mixed. Cream and mozzarella prices are strengthening, supported by seasonal demand, while butter and skimmed milk powder continue to face pressure.

Despite the large volumes of milk on the market, strong whey values and improving cream prices provide cautious optimism for farmgate milk prices, with current forecasts suggesting base milk prices could average between 32–34p/litre over the next six months.

New variety alert for 2026 - LG Highlight is here. 🌽

It's ultra-early (FAO 130), brand new from Limagrain, and already on the BSPB/NIAB 2026 First Choice list including for less favourable sites.

Why it matters right now:
🌡️ Soil temps are hitting drilling threshold, but cold springs punish slow starters. LG Highlight's excellent early vigour (7.2) means it gets away fast.

📅 Ultra-early harvest = more flexibility at the back end of the season, better soil conditions, earlier cover crop establishment, reduced harvest risk.

📊 18.5t DM/ha on less favourable sites — exceptional for such an early variety.
