𝙄𝙩 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙖 𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙥..

I was in a pub the other week, eating my food and chatting (well, sort of) with my husband.

The waiter came over and pinched a chip off my plate. He got my resting bitch face look™️ which is normally enough to deter anyone from a second go.

But …. back he came for another go. This time I told him I didn’t appreciate being disturbed. He shrugged and walked off.

When he came back a third time, I felt my hackles rise and was ready for him. I covered my hand with my plate to give him a clear “back off” signal but still he chose to pinch another chip. I was raging, I mean I literally had my hands over my plate!

When I saw him approach for a fourth time, I could feel my blood boiling and this time I told him in no uncertain terms to get the f**k away from me and my food. STILL he didn’t listen.

Just as I was about to finish my meal, in he comes again. I got up and pushed him away, telling him if he came close again I would punch him. That actually seemed to do the trick, but it didn’t make me feel great.

He was just doing his job, he had been so lovely and polite up until I started eating. Next time I go there, I’ll know what I need to do if he even looks like trying to approach me when I’m eating.

Now…
Imagine how your dog feels when hands repeatedly go into his food bowl while he’s just trying to eat in peace.

1. He might seem ok with it the first few times
2. Then he might stiffen up as you approach
3. He could give you a side eye
4. He’ll hunch over his bowl
5. He’ll growl at you
6. He’ll snap at you
7. He’ll lunge at you

Just like I did in the pub, eventually he’ll run out of patience. Before you know it, you’ll have a dog who is growling and snarling when you approach him when he’s eating. A dog who has learned that asking you politely doesnt work, and knows that only a growl, snarl or snap gets you to stop.

Make you being around their bowl a pleasant positive thing, walk past and drop some tasty extras in.

Stop being that rude waiter to your dog.

You don’t sleep well the night before.
You feel it building before you’ve even grabbed the lead.
That knot in your stomach, hoping that this time it’ll be better.

You try and keep upbeat but you know your dogs senses it. He hesitates at the door.
You’ve got the earliest possible appointment at stupid o’clock, in the hope that the waiting room isn’t full of other dogs.

You know they need to go.
You know the vet’s lovely.
But your dog doesn’t.

Does this sound familiar?

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking your dog needs to face his fears to learn to deal with them, he can’t help how he feels.

Does your dog struggle at the vet?
Tell me what you do to help them.

If you’d like some help with a plan to help your dog with this kind of thing, get in touch.

It’s been a busy couple of weeks training other peoples dogs, so it was nice to fit in a few minutes training with Charley after class this afternoon.

In just a quick 5 minute session, we did middle, move in middle, sit, look & back up, ending in a sort of close heel position.

I train heelwork on both sides so she does left & right, I also train another 6 positions in heel but that’s for another day.

She knows there’s gammon on offer so would have sold her soul to the devil if I’d asked. 🤣

Always keep the focus on fun in your training 🐾❤️

Sundays tracking class were awesome today. A bit cold with the occasional shower, but thermals and decent footwear sorted that little hiccup.

We did a couple of little exercises to show the dogs that “track” means get your head down and follow that track.

Their employees (owners!) then laid a short straight track for them with an article at the end.

I really wish I’d had a second pair of hands today to record the dogs on the track, they all blew me away with the skills they showed.

Super well done to all these youngsters, Tymber Large Munsterlander, Gwenni Cocker Spaniel , Cara Labrador and Cookie the Cocker Spaniel.

You were all amazing 🐾🐾👏

Bit difficult to get a picture of them but here’s my best shot 🤣

Charley’s nicknames :
Chile, Chilly Billy, Charley Barley, Pudding, Puds, Puddlington Bear and loads more. 🤣

I often wonder what nickname she would give me … but it’s probably none of the nice fluffy ones I like to think she’d use.

Probably something like PITA or FFS.

What do you reckon your dog’s nickname for you would be?

Chewing isn’t just “something to keep them busy.”

It’s how dogs unwind, clean their teeth, and work through stress - kind of like us fidgeting, snacking, or scrolling (but way healthier).

Let them chew. Just make sure it’s something you approve of, not your skirting boards.

Drop a 🦴 if your dog’s a professional-level chewer.

Triss came to a 1-1 tracking session yesterday.

She’s a delightfully busy girl, who doesn’t keep still. I was exhausted watching her, although her owner reports she’s a lovely chilled dog at home.

She is definitely a dog who needs a job, and once she has one her focus is intense.

We covered the foundation behaviours, which she smashed, and then went over teaching her owner her role as Triss’s employee.

Over the coming sessions we’ll progress that further, and I’m looking forward to seeing how she develops.

I couldn’t get a picture of her yesterday, so here’s one her mum sent me.

Isn’t she a stunner?

Third 1-1 session with Monty today.

In the previous two sessions, he was very wary of me and would bark and back off if I even looked at him. During those sessions, I put no pressure at all on him, I didn’t look at him and didn’t interact with him even if he chose to come close. I simply threw food away from me if he did.

Today we worked outside in the local park. When I first arrived, Monty again barked and lunged at me, and I couldn’t make a single move without him doing so.

Rather than coaching his owner today, I used the trust we had previously built, to start to show him that other humans and dogs aren’t necessarily a threat to him. I worked with him to teach him the process. and within 20 minutes he was choosing to trot around after me, fully engaged with playing my game.

The couple of dogs that walked past were ignored in favour of my game, he even looked at a nearby seagull and looked back to me for the game.

We did lots of sniffing games in between, and by the end of the session he was literally eating out of my hand, and was like a different dog.

Progress with dogs like this isn’t a case of telling them off when they bark & lunge, it’s a case of listening to them, taking things at their pace and building layers of trust. Only then can we hope to teach them a better way to respond.

His owner has put in all the hard work to get to this stage, and she was the emotional one today … this tearing up thing must be catching.🤣

She has her homework between now and her final session, but today showed her the value of having strong foundations in place to help her dog through this kind of behaviour. She’s worked so hard to build those, and it definitely showed today.

No dramatic before & after to see here - just a pic of today’s star of the show.

Well done Team Monty, you smashed it. 👏👏

𝙎𝙝𝙚’𝙨 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖 𝙗𝙞𝙩 𝙨𝙪𝙗𝙙𝙪𝙚𝙙, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙨𝙝𝙚’𝙨 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙖 𝙗𝙤𝙞𝙡𝙚𝙙 𝙚𝙜𝙜! 🤣

The stem cell treatment was nothing short of a miracle, only a matter of months ago her hip joints were bone on bone. Today, they showed cartilage had regenerated and her hips are sitting nicely in the joint sockets. I cannot thank David and his team at Conway Road Veterinary Surgery enough for the outstanding level of care she has been given over the last 3 years. She’s been through a really tough time, but thanks to David she is now off all her medications and is pain free and happy.

Anyone who knows me knows I don’t give or receive hugs particularly well (🤣), but I surprised myself and the vet this afternoon when I shed a little happy tear and ended up hugging him.

Cherish them, they’re not here for long 🐾❤️

The nil by mouth face.

Post stem cell X-rays this morning so no breakfast.

Fuming.

Little Tala looking very serious & studious reporting for her second training session today.
Her lovely owners have been doing the work with her and it shows.

✅ She’s been to the vets for a familiarisation visit, before going again for her vaccinations
✅ Car travel has been introduced
✅ She’s comfortable with noises like the hairdryer, vacuum and washing machine
✅ She’s comfortable with handling and grooming
✅ Toilet training is going well, and alone time is a work in progress which is totally normal for her age
✅ They have strategies in place for crazy zoomies, calm time and razor puppy teeth.

She is becoming a little thief 🤣 so today we worked on :
🐾 Response to name
🐾 Leave it
🐾 Hand touch
🐾 Collar grabs and getting her comfortable with getting the lead clipped on

She is going to be a proper people magnet with that face so we’ve also covered some exercises for calm greetings.

Next session will be out in the real world to do things like lead walking and recall.

𝙄𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙙𝙤𝙜, 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡?

Imagine going out for a walk with your best friend, and some stranger comes over and starts stroking your hair. They then put their arm around you and hug you. Your friend doesn’t say a word - she just lets it happen. You feel intimidated, afraid, and threatened by this person’s behaviour, so much so you explode and push the person away and tell them to f**k right off.

It really shakes you up, and you turn to your friend for support. But she just let it happen. She actually has a go at you for being “too feisty” and “overreacting”.
She says you need to learn to be calmer when those kinds of things happen.

How would you feel about your friend’s response?
The one person who should be on your side, just let that happen.
She didn’t even acknowledge that what the person did was inappropriate.
She told you to stop overreacting, that the person was just being nice.
Then she tells you that you need to behave better next time it happens.

That’s likely very much how your dog feels when random people come up and touch them uninvited.

If they behave like this towards other people, listen to them and show them you’re on their side.

Some dogs tolerate it, some enjoy it and some don’t.
Their body language will always tell you.

How does your dog feel about random people petting them?
