It’s important to keep an eye on water loss and to remember to top up your pond during the hot spells. Excessive water loss will cause distress to fish in your pond and can expose them to predators.

Your plants will also suffer too, if water levels aren’t kept an eye on.

Equisetum hyemale, commonly known as Dutch rush, is a remarkable evergreen plant that brings year-round interest to your garden.

This resilient species thrives even in extreme conditions, surviving up to 500 miles within the Arctic Circle. It is conveniently available potted in aquatic soil, making it ready for your pond.

With a medium growth rate, it can reach a height of up to 180 cm and is best planted at a depth of 0 to 15 cm. Native to the British Isles, it prefers a position in full sun to partial shade, although it does not specifically attract pollinators.

As a marginal pond plant, it adds a unique touch to aquatic landscapes.

Water lilies thrive during the summer months, revealing their beauty by opening in the daytime and, as a defence mechanism, will close in the late afternoon/early evening to protect themselves from the elements and preserve their pollen. They will flower for a number of consecutive days before disappearing and re-flowering again until the end of the season. They are perennial flowers and will return each year when nurtured. After all, the word lily does derive from the Latin word lilium which means rebirth and passion.
