A fantastic idea. If more cats were spayed/neutered, it would take immense pressure off rescues who inevitably end up with unwanted litters of kittens. Well done Almost Home 😊
After what has been a really difficult few weeks in rescue, we’re finding ourselves having more and more conversations with people who are struggling to get their cats spayed and neutered.
As every rescuer knows, kitten season is always challenging, but this year feels particularly overwhelming. We are seeing litter after litter arriving into rescue, and many of the situations could have been prevented if owners had been able to access affordable neutering sooner.
Just yesterday, a lady contacted us about three seven-week-old kittens she was unable to find homes for. The mother cat is only 16 months old and this was already her third litter. She explained that when she contacted her local vet to arrange a spay after the previous litter, there was a six-week wait, and by the time an appointment became available, the cat was pregnant again. The cost quoted was over £150, which simply wasn’t affordable for her at the time.
It got us thinking…
Would there be interest in a scheme where Almost Home could help contribute towards the cost of spaying and neutering cats, with owners also making a contribution themselves?
At this stage, we’re simply trying to gauge interest and gather opinions. We haven’t worked out the details yet, and any scheme would need to be fair, sustainable, and available to those who genuinely need support.
Do you think something like this would help? Would you, or someone you know, make use of a scheme that helped reduce the financial burden of getting a cat spayed or neutered?
Please let us know your thoughts in the comments. We genuinely want to find ways to reduce the number of unwanted litters ending up in rescue and help keep cats healthy and safe. 💖
