Still haven't been lucky enough to see a wild one in the 5yrs ive been here but ill never stop looking.
๐ Hello thereโฆ Iโm your local grass snake! ๐ฟ
Donโt worry - Iโm much more shy than scary. You might spot me basking in the sunshine near a pond, slowly gliding through long grass, or slipping silently into the water for a swim. Yes, swim! Iโm one of Britainโs longest native snakes, and Iโm right at home in wetlands, gardens, and peaceful countryside edges.
Iโve got a bit of style too - look out for my distinctive yellow and black collar behind my head. Itโs like my very own signature scarf! And while I might look dramatic, Iโm completely harmless to humans. I prefer a diet of frogs, toads, and fishโฆ so if youโve got a wildlife-friendly pond, we might just become neighbours. ๐ธ
๐ Why do I matter?
Iโm one of 100 very special animals, plants and fungi chosen to help humans keep an eye on how well the natural world is doing. When you see me, itโs a sign that habitats like wetlands and rough grassland are still thriving.
