Meet the gorgeous Willow, this week’s superstar at Dogwood Referrals! 💖

Willow had a rare condition called Pes Varus, causing her leg to bend inward, something we occasionally see in dachshunds 🐶.

Working with Fusion Implants, we used custom-made guides to plan and perform surgery that straightened her leg with precision.
She’s now healing brilliantly and already back to her cheeky self! 💪💕

Meet Rolo 🤎🍫

Rolo is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who came in to see Emma for his 2nd vaccination.

He did require some convincing that is was a good idea to begin with, but he was the best boy after some bribery 😉

Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to take lots if pictures of Rolo, as he wasn’t able to contain his excitement and sit still 🤣

Hello everyone !

Mr Charlie came in to see our Student Veterinary Nurse Sim for a 6 monthly health check.

Charlie was purring so loud she couldn’t hear his heart during his health check 😹🧡 she was sure it was it there somewhere !

‼️ SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE ‼️

With this warmer weather we are having we have had an influx of pets coming in with heatstroke.

On our previous post you can look at tips to keep your pet cool during warm weather.

☀️ Below you can find signs of early and progressive heatstroke:

Early Signs:

‼️ Excessive Panting: This is a primary indicator, especially if it's more than usual or occurs even when the pet is at rest.

‼️ Drooling: Excessive drooling, sometimes thick and foamy, is another common sign.

‼️ Red Gums and Tongue: The mucous membranes may appear bright red or even blue as the condition worsens.

‼️ Increased Heart Rate: You may notice a faster than normal heartbeat.

‼️ Restlessness or Agitation: The pet may appear anxious, pacing, or seeking out cooler areas.

Progression of Heatstroke:

‼️ Lethargy or Drowsiness: The pet may become sluggish, weak, and unsteady.

‼️ Vomiting and Diarrhoea: These can occur and may even contain blood in severe cases.

‼️ Mental Confusion: Disorientation, staggering, or difficulty maintaining balance may be present.

‼️ Muscle Tremors and Seizures: In advanced stages, the pet may experience muscle tremors, seizures, or even collapse.

‼️ Collapse and Unconsciousness: This is a critical stage requiring immediate veterinary attention.

“No dog has ever died from missing one walk, but dogs have died from one walk in the heat – don't take the risk”

This weekend the UK is due a heatwave with temperatures going up to 30’c 🥵

‼️ Heat stroke can leave significate damage on the brain and some cases can even be fatal ‼️

🐾 Here are some tips to keep your dog's cool this summer:

✅ Either walk early morning or late at night to miss the peak temperatures.

✅ Cooling mats can be bought online and kept in the fridge for your fur baby to sit on.

✅ Cooling jackets / vets can be worn during the day, however, please ensure to check this continuously as they start to warm up.

✅ Ensure cool water is always available.

✅ You can make doggy ice lollies with fruit and dog friendly fruit juice.

✅ It’s the perfect time to get the hose out to play in the water.

✅ Stay indoors and keeping blinds closed to stop the heat coming in.

✅ Frozen lick mats are a great for mental stimulation and to keep your fur baby cool

‼️ Remember, if the pavement is too hot for your hand it is certainly too hot for your dog's feet ‼️
