Ambugreen - Antibiotic-Free Wound Protection for Livestock

Ambugreen is a gel-based wound care product that offers physical and microbial protection—without antibiotics. Once applied, it dries into a flexible, waterproof barrier that lasts up to 3 days and then flakes off naturally.

✅ Where Can You Use Ambugreen?
· To protect surgical sites, udder clefts, disbudding wounds and hoof lesions.
· Protects lameness-related injuries without the need for conventional bandages.
· To ensure fly protection for lesions during warmer months.
· Supports natural wound healing while keeping the area protected from environmental contamination.

✅ Why make the switch to Ambugreen?
· Antibiotic-Free: No withdrawal period, no residues.
· Long-Lasting Protection: More durable than traditional aerosol sprays.
· Biofilm-Resistant: Blocks bacteria and promotes clean, natural healing.
· No Bandage Removal: The coating biodegrades and falls off on its own.
· Effective Fly Barrier: Prevents flies from bothering the site while it is healing.

Disbudding - autumn calves 🐄

The Autumn block calvers amongst you will be starting to get busy, if you’re not already! This is a reminder to get your disbudding booked in - whether that’s traditional or knock down.

Knock downs are great for larger groups, and often cost effective too - the more you do the cheaper it is. This also depends on whether there are other jobs to do at the same time, so worth checking in with your vet to discuss how we can make the job as efficient as possible.

[Here’s a photo of some sleepy calves following their knock down disbuds last week with Lauren and Sky]

If you haven’t had knock down disbuds before but are interested, please speak to your vet.

Ewe prolapse survey

We are hoping to discover more about how you manage and treat vaginal prolapses in lambing ewes. With these insights, we can better understand how it is manged on farm and help develop advice which can enhance welfare and achieve the best outcome.

The survey, which is anonymous, asks for general information about your flock and some in depth details of how cases have been treated this year. This is a VetPartners survey developed by experienced farm vets (including Gina!) across the UK. It shouldn't take any more than 10 minutes to complete.

The survey can be accessed here and closes 1st August: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VaginalProlapse

Ram Fertility testing

It is time to book your rams in for their annual MOT ahead of the breeding season.

In the clinical assessment, we will physically check the ram including teeth, testicles, feet and body condition to identify any problem areas. Following the physical exam, we will analyse a semen sample to ensure the ram is firing on all cylinders!

In addition to the standard testing, we can also do some disease screening which may be beneficial for your flock.

10 weeks ahead of tupping gives you time to sort any issues or organise replacements, therefore please call us to book your rams in.

Trace element deficiencies in dry conditions

The dry weather we're currently having can wreak havoc on mineral availability in soil and forage for livestock. The lack of moisture decreases soil microbe activity which is key to mineralisation. Regularly test your soil and keep an eye on livestock for mineral deficiencies.

This could include:
- poor growth
- decreased appetite
- rough coat
- ill thrift
- reproductive issues

Speak to your vet if you are concerned.

Reduction tests for faecal egg counting 💩

While we are in faecal egg counting season, it's a good time to reiterate the importance of performing reduction tests following parasite treatments.

This involves a pre and post treatment worm egg count to identify if the treatment has worked. The 'wait period' for the post wormer sample depends on the treatment given - check this with us first.

If the post-treatment samples show signs of parasite, then the treatment may not have been effective and alternative treatment may be required. This is increasing all the time as more and more cases of resistance are seen.
