As Carla Lane point out, post XL bully ban, many more dogs need to wear muzzles. This means even greater precautions are required to ensure they are kept safe and well in hot weather.

☀️ Heatstroke in Dogs and Cats ☀️

Heatstroke can affect any pet, but it is more common in dogs, especially those with thick fur, brachycephalic breeds, older or overweight pets. Be alert to the signs of heatstroke as it can progress very quickly.

Signs of Heatstroke in Dogs and Cats

- Hot to touch
- Excessive panting at rest
- Excessive drooling
- Bright red gums and tongue
- Lethargy and weakness
- Rapid heartbeat and breathing
- Seizure

How to Prevent Heatstroke

- Ensure your pet has access to fresh, cool water at all times
- Keep them in a well-ventilated room
- If your pet is outdoors, ensure they have access to shade
- Consider cooling accessories such as cooling mats or vests designed for pets
- Never leave a pet in a locked vehicle in warm weather
- Limit exercise during the day, and walk pets at dusk or dawn

‼️Remember if the ground feels too warm on the back of your hand, it’s extremely hot on their paws ‼️

If you believe your pet is suffering from heatstroke, this is an emergency. Please call us immediately on 0151 548 7733.

🌟 Pet of the Week 🌟

Each week, we’ll shine a little spotlight on one of your wonderful companions, sharing their photo, their story, and what makes them so special.

Turbo the tortoise is our Pet of the Week this week!

Here is what her owner has to say about her:

“Turbo loves to skateboard, and you’ll often find her zipping around the house on it! She lives with a budgie and two dogs, and despite tortoises having a reputation for moving slowly, Turbo lives up to her name and chases them around. She also loves to breakdance and twirl around in her shell.”

To take part in pet of the week:

Send a photo of your beloved pet to [email protected], along with their name, age, and a fun or heart-warming fact about them.

Elsa the chicken is our Pet of the Week this week!

Here is what her parents have to say about her:

“Elsa is 3 years old and a very active chicken, loving to run and jump around. Her favourite thing to do is to sit on the window ledge and watch her mum doing the dishes. When she sees her dad’s car coming down the road, she lets out a clucking noise that sounds as though she is singing, so it is a nice welcome home!”

Veterinary Surgeon Wanted – Join the Team at Mersey Vets

We are looking for a dedicated and experienced Veterinary Surgeon to join our friendly team at Mersey Vets.

This role would suit a vet with at least a couple of years’ experience who is passionate about delivering outstanding care. We’re searching for someone who is not only clinically confident, but also genuinely kind, compassionate, and caring towards both pets and their owners.

At Mersey Vets, we believe great veterinary care goes beyond treatment. We pride ourselves on creating an environment where every client and every pet feels truly understood, valued, and supported. We are looking for someone who shares this ethos—someone willing to go the extra mile to build trust, provide reassurance, and make a real difference.

What we’re looking for:

A qualified Veterinary Surgeon with a minimum of 2 years’ experience
A warm, empathetic approach with excellent communication skills
A commitment to high standards of patient and client care
A team player who contributes positively to a supportive workplace

What we offer:

Competitive salary (to be discussed, depending on experience)
A supportive and welcoming team environment
All the usual perks and benefits

If you’re looking to be part of a practice where compassion and care are at the heart of everything we do, we’d love to hear from you.

Rhykir the Giant Schnauzer is our Pet of the Week this week!

Rhykir often accompanies his brother Wills, another Giant Schnauzer, on his visits to the practice. He may look like an old man, but Rhykir is only 7 months old, has more growing to do, and already almost as big as Wills! Rhykir is super friendly, gives plenty of cuddles at reception, and is a really good boy for the vet. We always look forward to seeing him again!

Send a photo of your beloved pet to [email protected], along with their name, age, and a fun or heart-warming fact about them.

🐣 Take Egg-stra Care: Easter Dangers for Pets 🐣

While we’re enjoying chocolate eggs and Easter treats, many of these goodies can be dangerous for our furry friends:

🍫 Chocolate - Contains theobromine which is toxic to pets
🐰 Hot Cross Buns - Contain raisins and currants which are toxic to pets
🍬 Sweets - Containing xylitol can cause vomiting and seizures
🎁 Foil Wrappers - Can lead to choking and blockages
🍖 Cooked Bones - Can lead to obstructions, blockages and perforations within the gastrointestinal tract
🌼 Daffodils - Are poisonous to pets if they eat the bulbs or drink water from the vase they are in
🌷 Tulips - Can irritate the mouth and gastrointestinal tract, making pets experience vomiting and diarrhoea

To avoid an emergency vet appointment this Easter, you can do the following:

✔️ Keep all Easter treats out of reach
✔️ Remind guests, especially children not to share snacks
✔️ Watch for symptoms like vomiting, restlessness, or lethargy

If you suspect your pet has ingested any of the above, please contact us immediately on 0151 548 4477.

Teddy the Bulldog is our Pet of the Week this week!

Teddy is quite possibly one of the youngest patients we have had. At just 12 days old, Teddy’s owner brought him to us as he was feeling a little poorly. However, after a check-up with one of our vets and cuddles with our staff, he went home feeling a lot better!

Send a photo of your beloved pet to [email protected], along with their name, age, and a fun or heart-warming fact about them.
