Hot weather can be dangerous for our dogs – even on days that don’t feel extremely hot. ☀️🐾

Unlike us, dogs can’t regulate their body temperature efficiently, which means they can overheat very quickly. A short walk in the midday sun, hot pavements, or even a few minutes left in a warm car can have devastating consequences.

Here at K9 Academy your dog’s health & wellbeing always come first.
Please help us spread awareness by sharing this post—you could help keep another dog safe this summer. ☀️🐕

🐾 What are your thoughts on raised dog beds & have you ever used one for your dog? 🐾

Raised dog beds don’t just reduce pressure on the joints. They are comfortable, help to keep your dog cool in the warm weather & are one of the best tools for professional dog training.

Instant Boundaries: The distinct raised edge creates a clear visual "island." Your dog knows exactly where their boundary starts & ends, making the "place" command easy to teach.

Built-In Impulse Control: Stepping off the raised platform requires a deliberate choice. This creates a mental "speed bump" that deters your dog from breaking command the second the doorbell rings!

Ultimate Comfort & Relaxation: The hammock design relieves joint pressure & maximizes airflow making dogs feel physically cool. They are comfortable, so they will want to stay there.

Reduces Velcro Behavior: Sending your pup to their raised bed builds independent relaxation, helping to curb separation anxiety right in your own living room.

Portable Training Power: Lightweight & easy to move! Take it from the lounge to the garden, or pop it in the car & take it with you to practice focus around real-world distractions.

Drop a comment or photo below if you've tried a raised bed, or send us a message to learn how to teach the "place" command step-by-step!

Is your dog “kind of busy”, doing their own thing when you are wanting their attention & engagement?

Training is impossible without engagement, so start by making yourself more interesting than the environment.

4 Steps to Reliable Focus:

Ditch the bowl: Use your dog’s daily kibble to reward hand-feeding & voluntary eye contact.

Lower the criteria: Practice inside your quiet living room before asking for focus in a busier environment & on walks.

Upgrade the value: Bring out high-value rewards like chicken when competing with big distractions.

Play builds engagement: Incorporating play into your training routine shifts your dog's focus from the environment to you, transforming engagement from a strict chore into an exciting, high-value game.

Building engagement takes time, but teaching your dog that you are the source of all good things is the secret to engagement, reliable recall & stress-free walks.

Here at K9 Academy, we specialize in turning distracted pups into focused partners.

Keep your dog cool & entertained in the hot weather! ☀️

As the temperature rises, why not try these fun enrichment ideas to help your dog stay safe & stimulated:

-Let them splash around in a dog-friendly paddling pool.

-Fill a food-dispensing toy with wet food & pop it in the fridge/freezer for a cooling snack. Frozen stuffed Kongs are great!

-Try a scent game in a shady spot to keep their mind busy without risk of overheating.

-Remember pavements can be warm, so check by placing your hand for 5 seconds to see if it's too much for their paws.

-If out & about - do early morning/late evening walks & try to stick to the shaded side of the street.

-Always ensure they have access to plenty of fresh water & avoid playtime during the hottest parts of the day. You may want to place additional water bowls around your home.

Mastering the “sit” in our incredible training sessions this week.

Did you just bring home an 8 week old puppy?

It’s easy to want to jump straight into advanced commands but the secret to a great foundation is to keep things simple, short, fun and highly rewarding.

Puppies at this age have a small attention span. I usually stick to fun sessions under 5 minutes, 2 to 3 times a day.

Transformation doesn't happen overnight but it does happen with daily repetition & consistency.

Repetition builds muscle memory or neural pathways. Consistency ensures that the actions being repeated are actually correct & moving your dog towards their goal.

When everyone in the household uses the same commands & the same rules, your dog understands what you want.

Even out-of-control dogs have the potential to become calm & well-behaved through patient, consistent obedience training. 🐾
