At just 6 months old, Zeus started telling us that the world felt a little too overwhelming. Passing dogs became something to worry about, and like many nervous dogs, he felt that reacting was the only way to make the scary thing go away.
So instead of asking him to โjust stop reactingโ, we listened.
We worked on building his confidence, not suppressing his emotions. We spent weeks doing neutrality sessions with his siblings, teaching him that he could simply exist around other dogs without needing to interact with them. Along the way, one thing became obviousโhis big sister, Pebbles, became his safe place. Watching her calmly navigate the world gave Zeus the confidence to do the same.
This week, at only 8 months old, we took him on a busy village walk. Dogs passed him, people stopped to chat, there was plenty going onโฆ and Zeus chose calm. He looked to us for reassurance, took comfort in his big sisters presence, kept his focus, and walked away from every encounter without reacting.
Was it perfect? No. Was it a huge milestone? Absolutely.
Because Zeus isnโt โfixedโ, and we would never expect him to be. He still finds some situations difficult, and he still doesnโt want dogs in his personal spaceโand thatโs okay. The difference is that he now has the confidence to cope without feeling the need to shout about it.

Confidence isnโt built by throwing a dog into difficult situationsโitโs built through trust. As Zeusโ handlers, weโve learned his boundaries, respected his limits, and always advocate for him when he needs us. Knowing weโre there to keep him safe has allowed his confidence to grow a little more every day.
