🎃 Let’s get ready for Halloween

Halloween can be great fun for us, but for our dogs it can mean a lot of unusual things happening all at once.

People knocking at the door, excited children outside, costumes, masks, decorations and a routine that suddenly feels a little different.

And our dogs have absolutely no idea why everyone has suddenly started dressing as witches and skeletons. 😂

So rather than waiting until Halloween night, now is a good time to start thinking about how you'll support your dog.

🐾 Practise knocks and the doorbell

🐾 Decide where your dog will be when trick or treaters arrive

🐾 Give them a quiet, comfortable space away from the front door

🐾 Introduce decorations gradually and let them investigate at their own pace

🐾 Remember that costumes and masks can make familiar people look very different

🐾 Keep chocolate, sweets and wrappers safely out of reach

A little preparation now can make Halloween night much easier for everyone. 🎃🩷🐾

I've been a little quieter on here recently. 🙈

Life has been rather busy behind the scenes and somehow posting on social media has kept finding its way to the bottom of the list. 😂

But I'm still here! 👋

And with Halloween, fireworks and Christmas all creeping up on us, I've been thinking about how much this time of year can affect our dogs.

So I'll be popping up with a few useful things to think about over the coming weeks, along with the usual bits and pieces from MyLuka.

I'm not promising I'll suddenly become organised and post every day though.

Let’s get ready for fireworks season now 🐾

Fireworks may still feel a little way off, but this week is a great time to start preparing rather than waiting until the bangs begin.

A few things you can start doing now:

• Create a safe space your dog can choose to retreat to. Make it comfortable and familiar, and let them use it whenever they want.

• Think about sound. If you normally use the TV, radio or other background noise during fireworks, start making that part of everyday life now.

• Check your security. Gates, fences, doors and your dog’s microchip details are worth checking before fireworks season arrives.

• Plan ahead for walks. Start thinking about how you could adjust your routine so your dog can be walked earlier on evenings when fireworks are expected.

• Notice what helps your dog settle. A favourite bed, chew, enrichment activity, being close to you or choosing somewhere quiet. Every dog will be different.

• If your dog really struggles with fireworks, speak to your vet early. Don't wait until fireworks are already happening to ask for help.

Preparation doesn't have to be complicated.

Starting early simply gives you and your dog more options when fireworks season arrives. 🩷🐾

Calmness training with Luka. ❤️

This takes me back.

Luka wasn't exactly born knowing how to switch off. 😂

He was a busy puppy, a busy adolescent and always seemed to have somewhere to be or something to investigate.

So learning that sometimes absolutely nothing happens became just as important as all the other things we taught him.

Sitting or working together. Watching the world. Not needing to do anything.

It's something we've practised together for years, and at nine years old it's still part of our life.

I think that's one of the things I love most about training.

It isn't always about teaching something new.

Sometimes it's simply about learning how to be together. ❤️🐾

Today is a s**t day.

There. I said it. 🙈

I've worked hard. I've tried different things. I've changed things. I've tried again.

And today I'm tired, frustrated and wondering what the bloody hell I'm doing.

I'm not giving up.
I'm not looking for sympathy.
And I'm definitely not going to give you some inspirational quote about every cloud having a silver lining. 😂

Running your own little business can be brilliant.

Sometimes it's just bloody hard.

And I think the same can be said for life with our dogs.

Some days everything seems to come together, and other days the daily struggles can leave you wondering what on earth you're doing.

So today I'm sitting on my bench with Luka, desperately trying to hold myself together...

while he looks at me like,

“Oh, don't be so dramatic, woman.” 🙄😂

One of the things I've been thinking about with MyLuka is how I can support more owners without every conversation needing a home visit.

I love one to one training in your own home and that's not going anywhere. 🐾

But sometimes you don't actually need me standing in your living room.

Sometimes you need to talk through a training difficulty, understand what's happening and work out what to do next.

Running a mobile business has also become increasingly expensive, particularly with the cost of travelling to every appointment.

Telephone Support gives me another way of working.

It means I can keep offering the personal one to one support that is such an important part of MyLuka, without every session involving travel.

And because neither of us needs to travel, it also means I can finally support owners outside the King's Lynn area.

Same Julie.

You just need to talk to someone who can help you make sense of what's happening with your dog and work out what to do next.

I've wanted to offer this through MyLuka for a long time, and today I'm finally doing it. ❤️

A 45 minute one to one telephone session focused on a specific training difficulty you're having with your puppy or dog.

We'll talk through what's happening, what you've already tried and what you're finding difficult.

Then we'll work out three practical next steps together.

After our call, I'll send those three steps to you in writing so you know exactly where to start.

Telephone Support is for training difficulties such as puppy settling and routines, crate training, confidence, engagement, recall foundations, lead walking, focus, self control and navigating adolescence.
