⏱️ Timing is essential in separation anxiety training!

When working on home alone training, especially in the early stages, progress often happens in tiny increments which is sometimes just a few seconds at a time.

Each increase is carefully planned based on your individual dog and where they are in their training journey, so it’s really important to stick to the exact duration you’ve been given.

Counting in your head isn’t always as accurate as you might think!! Those extra few seconds can add up, and if we accidentally go over the planned time, we risk pushing your dog too much too soon which we want to avoid!

That’s why I always recommend using a stopwatch, timer, or watch that measures down to the second. I personally used to use my Apple Watch to keep an accurate track!

It can also be a little risky to rely solely on counting along with the camera app. If the video pauses, buffers, or glitches (it’s happened to me way too many times!!), it’s very easy to lose where you were, forget what you had counted to and accidentally stay out longer than planned.

Accuracy matters in separation anxiety training, and those small details can make a big difference to your dog’s success 🙏🏻

If you’ve searched online for help with your dog’s separation anxiety, you’ve probably come across advice like:

✔️ Give them a Kong/food item.
✔️ Crate train them.
✔️ Exercise them more/tire them out.
✔️ increasing the time you’re gone.
✔️ Ignore the barking, whining, and crying.

While these strategies are commonly recommended, they often leave you wondering:

“Why is my dog still struggling when I leave?”

None of these approaches address the root cause of separation anxiety: fear.

When a dog is struggling home alone, they’re not being stubborn, naughty, or attention seeking. They’re genuinely distressed by being left alone.

These common pieces of advice either:
• Ignore the fear completely.
• Try to suppress or contain the symptoms.
• Temporarily mask the problem.
• ignore the dog’s threshold/coping abilities.

And while some may provide very short term relief like not panicking because they’re busy eating a Kong, they don’t teach your dog to feel safe and confident when alone.

Real progress happens when we address the underlying emotion driving the behaviour not just the barking, whining, or destruction we see on the surface.

Congratulations to Rosie for achieving her first milestone of 1 minute home alone 👏🏻🎉✨

When we started, Rosie couldn’t be left home alone at all and during her assessment Rosie became anxious with her owner touching the door handle.

Fast forward to today, and she’s just aced a full minute home alone completely chilled, relaxed, and showing absolutely no signs of stress 🙌🏻

Rosie’s guardian has been incredibly dedicated, consistent, and committed to helping Rosie, trusting the process every step of the way even when progress felt slow. Today’s success is a reflection of all her hard work🤍

I’m so proud of both of them and can’t wait to see Rosie’s progress ✨

Luna’s Medical Update 🤍

Luna has been diagnosed with Tethered Cord Syndrome (TCS). She is unfortunately not a candidate for surgery, so there is no cure. This is a progressive condition, and she will never get better. I don’t know what her future looks like, and I’m too scared to ask or think about it right now.

I’m heartbroken that this is her reality and that she’s been struggling for so long. I’m so sad that things weren’t taken seriously when she was only 9 months old and the signs were there.

I’m incredibly grateful that I finally found someone who listened and took the time to review Luna’s case from start to finish, carefully looking every single behavioural and physical sign and listening, believing and validating everything I had to say.

If you’ve ever met Luna, you’d never know how much she has been dealing with every day. She loves everyone she meets, she’s incredibly affectionate, and she’s so silly and funny and she makes me laugh every single day. She’s truly the loveliest dog and she deserved so much better.

Thank you to everyone who has checked in, sent messages, offered support, shared personal experience, and encouraged me to find the mental willpower to push one final time. We wouldn’t have got here without you so I’m truly so grateful for you.

For now, our focus is sorting out her new medication and making sure she has as many good days as possible 🤍
