Loading practice AND a weigh in for Phoenix today and yesterday.
We believe Phoenix has had a scare at some point in his life on a horse box. So we’re working on getting him desensitised to loud noises and just standing on the box to help him realise that he is safe and nothing bad is going to happen to him.
Desensitisation and counter conditioning are behaviour modification techniques.
There is help out there for dogs and cats in the form of animal behaviourists and veterinary practices that offer ‘fear free’ clinics. It could be that your pet becomes stressed when they have to go to the vets. Or it could be your dog is reactive to certain triggers or has a guarding behaviour issue.
Desensitising and counter conditioning isn’t a quick fix, it is a process, but it may be something that really helps your pet with any issues you feel they may have, just like Phoenix has with his fear of standing on the horse box.
Then this morning, we had the weigh bridge lady out to check what his weight is doing now we’re on the approach to the autumn months coming up. Yey! 🍂😅🎉
I always expect weight gain on my horse at this time of year with the summer grass and less exercise (totally down to me) and especially this summer with the heat waves we’ve had, I’ve personally found it too hot to ask my horse to carry me on long rides.
So we have done shorter rides first thing in the mornings so a lot less exercise than what he gets in the cooler months.
Pleased to say that he is still in a good weigh bracket for him. 11kg weight gain but something that we can easily look at getting off again.
It’s always good to have your pets weighed regularly. Horses, dogs and cats.
It can help to prevent any future weight related health issues and even help to pick up on any underlying issues if there is an unusual weight gain or loss that has happened with no dietary or exercise changes.
