I don’t usually make posts like this, but this is too important to ignore. We strongly advise against supporting Home Farm Phids - Cornwall Jumping Spiders, or any breeders associated with them.

They are convicted animal abusers 😡 sadly many people are still completely unaware of this fact, and continue to recommend them to new people in the hobby.

Why are spiders so "hairy"? 🕷

What looks like hair on a spider isn’t actually true hair.

Spiders are covered in tiny, specialised structures called setae - fine bristles made of chitin, not keratin like mammal hair. Many of these are sensory, picking up information from the world around them.

Some setae detect air movement, helping a spider sense approaching predators or struggling prey, while others respond to vibration or touch, acting as an ultra-sensitive warning system. When these bristles are bent by airflow or contact, nerve cells at their base register the change and send signals to the spider’s nervous system.

Different types of setae have different roles: trichobothria detect extremely faint air currents, while stiffer bristles help with grip, movement across surfaces, or handling silk. Spiders also use specialised hairs on their pedipalps for grooming.

So that “hairy” spider isn’t really hairy at all - it’s covered in a finely tuned network of environmental sensors 🤯
