☀️ Summer Safety Tips ☀️

Where is the best place for my horse to be when the weather is hot? 🥵🐴

This is a very difficult question to answer as there are so many factors to consider - mostly what facilities are available to the horse.

What requirements are needed for the horse in the field? ⛱

Your horse needs somewhere in their field that they can hide from the flies and the heat. If your field has no trees around it then a field shelter is the best option to enable your horse to cool themselves down whilst out in the field - there must be shade provided by some source. Water (as discussed yesterday!) is also another factor to consider as the horse will need constant access to fresh clean water.

What about stabling? 🏠

Stables can provide shelter from the heat of the day but at the same time the air in stables can become very stationary especially with poor ventilation. This can worsen breathing problems or just prevent your horse from cooling down. Well-designed stables have windows which will allow a draught to pass through the stable. Stables with poor ventilation will have more dust and cobwebs, the presence of lots of cobwebs in itself is not a problem, but it can let you know that the ventilation in your stable isn’t good. To help provide a breeze then fans can be used (safely obviously with no access to the horse!) to help draw in cooler air from outside the stable. Fans also help decrease flies as flies and midges struggle to fly in faster flowing air!

☀️ When to treat in this heat ☀️

Many of you will be aware that temperatures are set to rise this weekend and over next week.
With that, some will be questioning whether sessions will still be going ahead.

With temperatures creeping up to 28 degrees, sessions WILL still be going ahead, but there are some amendments that need to be made.

Thankfully, the clinic is well ventilated and water temperatures can be adjusted as needed, so canine clients are all good.
For my equine clients, I just ask that there is a well ventilated area of shade to treat in.

During a session, no matter what treatment I am doing, whether it’s treadmill work, massage work or laser, circulation is increased. Additionally, we are moving lymph and manipulating tissue fluids and so it is so important to factor in the heat. All sessions will be tailored as appropriate.

Following treatment I advise (as always but even more so in hotter conditions):
💦animals have 24/7 access to fresh water
🌳animals have access to shade
💤animals are given a sufficient rest period
This will aid in tissue recovery post treatment and ensure animal welfare is being met.

I will be keeping an eye on temperatures, but if you have any concerns regarding a session this coming week, please do get in touch. 📞

🔦Client spotlight 🔦

Today’s client spotlight focuses on the beautiful Dexter✨.

Back in October Dexter managed to fracture his pelvis. He presented mildly lame in a physio session and whilst palpating over him, some small bone chips were found on his right side tuber coxae. He was examined by the vet and x-rays confirmed suspicions. Thankfully the fracture was not on a joint, but it was important to give this injury time to heal 🕰️ .

With thorough, commendable, perseverance from his owner, daily Arc use and a strict rehabilitative exercise programme, Dexter has made a full recovery and is back doing what he loves.

Well done Chloe for your hard work, getting him back on track. I look forward to seeing what this year holds for you both. 🫶

☀️Summer sunshine and exercise☀️

With the summer sunshine slowly coming through, I just wanted to write a post about exercising our animals in the heat.

The summer sun means many of us will wake the most of taking our dogs and horses to the beach🏝️ This is great fun and exercise but it is important to remember the soft sand is not always a common surface for them and puts additional tension on soft tissue structures including muscles, tendons and ligaments. Now I know many pets will love the beach but it is such a common cause of strains and overuse. So ensuring a gentle introduction, on lead or good walking warm up BEFORE having a blast around is key. Where possible keep to the more compact sand when moving at higher speeds as this provides more support and stability. The day following the beach, overuse stress on the body can be evident so allowing sufficient rest and recovery💤 is also essential, with turnout for our horses and controlled walking for our dogs.

🌡️Heatstroke is also a huge risk on hot sunny days. You should always make sure your animals have access to clean fresh water and provide plenty of adequate rest breaks in the shade.

Beth Roberts veterinary physiotherapy of course wants you and your animals to enjoy the summer sun but doing so in a safe and healthy way.

📷If you were lucky enough to make the most of this weeks glorious weather with your pet, post a picture in the comments with what you got up to.

🐾 Small animal services 🐾
As you will have seen, Beth Roberts Veterinary Physiotherapy now offers small animal services!

Did you know approximately 40% of all cats and 90% over 10 years have arthritis? 🐈
And the prevalence of dogs needing surgery be that for joint problem, soft tissue injuries, spinal issues or breed related conditions has significantly increased over the last few years.
Our knowledge and research in the veterinary field is constantly expanding and so it means that we are able to help more animals live a fulfilling life despite their ailments. So how can we help your pet? 🐕

💧 Hydrotherapy- having access to the underwater treadmill, hydrotherapy is an excellent form of reduced weight bearing exercise. It can aid weight loss in dogs, aid those who are suffering from joint issues, help with gait reeducation following injury, assist in neurological cases and is fantastic for controlled strength and conditioning work.

🚨Laser- a fantastic pain and inflammation relief as well as aid in healing. Laser utilises light-tissue interaction, also known as photobiomodulation, to increase cell energy and improve circulation. In doing so this helps to reoxygenate tissues and remove waste product from the area.

🧬Tens- Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation is another effective tool used to manage acute and chronic pain.

🤲Manual therapies- massage, stretching, mobilisations. All keeping your pets joint mobile, muscles supple and animals flexible, whilst helping to reduce pain and tension in the body.

🏃‍♀️Exercise prescription- from post surgery to agility athletes- specific exercise prescription helps with steady progress, setting each animal up for success and reduces the risk of injury or reinjury.

RAMP registration done for the year ✅
But what does that mean? RAMP stands for Register of Animal Musculoskeletal Practitioners and is the governing body for veterinary physiotherapists alongside other musculoskeletal professionals.
It provides you with a register of accredited members. With me being a member it also provides you assurance that you are receiving gold standard care and advice from a qualified professional that keeps up to date with learning and advances in the field.

With another year in practice that means another year of growth📈
So what can you expect from Beth Roberts Veterinary Physiotherapy over the next year?

🐾 expand the canine sector of the business- I know this is a new venture so thank you everyone so far for your support.

🧠 improved knowledge and practical technique- this is a continual area of growth so that I can offer the best of my knowledge and skill to my clients.

🔨 growth in my physiotherapy tool kit- with new research and technology, best practice is always advancing and therefore I hope to grow with the industry, making some improvements to my tool kit.

🎪attending and hosting events- I have som fun things planned for this year including shows but I’ve been wanting to host some owner workshops, what do you guys think?

🐴 continued growth of equine clientele whilst continuing to support current clients.

And on that note, I also think it’s also time for a bit of a uniform upgrade…
