We should be celebrating having Zeke and Lexi home. Instead, we are facing the heartbreaking reality of the condition Lexi has returned in — and the emotional toll this entire process has taken on us.
A few weeks before she was seized, Lexi weighed 33.6kg, as recorded on her vet records. She was healthy, strong, and full of life. Six months later, she has come home weighing just 28.2kg — a loss of over 5kg. She is skin and bones.
She is lethargic, withdrawn, and clearly unwell. The end of her tail has died and now requires amputation surgery costing £1,500. We do not know how long she was suffering in this condition. Not knowing how long she may have been in pain without us there to help her is devastating.
Her ears are cut and scarred, and every time she shakes her head they split back open and bleed again. We are cleaning them daily, trying to keep them protected while she waits for further veterinary treatment. She is visibly uncomfortable.
She went into kennels healthy. She has come home underweight, injured, and needing surgery.
Throughout the six months they were away, communication was inconsistent. We experienced delays in paperwork and updates, which added unnecessary stress to an already traumatic situation. Despite repeatedly asking for information, we were never told her condition had deteriorated. We were given no indication that she was suffering like this. Finding out after the fact — seeing it with our own eyes — has been a hard pill to swallow.The emotional toll on her is visible. The physical toll is undeniable.
No owner should ever have to bring their dog home only to discover they now need surgery. We have now formally requested the redacted kennel records because we need transparency and clarity about what happened while our dogs were in care.
Right now, our focus is on getting Lexi through surgery, restoring her weight, managing her pain, and helping her emotionally recover from everything she has endured.
The financial strain after such a long and exhausting journey is significant. The £1,500 surgery is just the beginning, before medication, follow-ups, and ongoing treatment. We fought so hard to bring them home. Now we are fighting to heal the damage — not just her body, but her spirit too. She deserved to feel safe.
