Confessions of a dog groomer.

Your own dog is always the last to get done!

I took Coco for her annual bluebell photo session, unfortunately it didn’t come out as well as previous years due to the mass of hair she had grown.

Next available cancellation slot to come up and she was in for a much needed trim.

So we went back to the woods to recreate the magical bluebell photo, only to find we were too late, but we managed to find the one remaining bluebell.

Hey ho, there’s always next year 🤷‍♀️

A lockdown puppy who went more than six months without a proper groom – leaving him looking more like his Star Wars namesake Chewbacca – has finally been transformed after drinking spring water, his owner claims. Our lovely Chewie has made the news! We have been working with Chewie for a while helping him through his difficulties with being groomed.

Chewie, a five‑year‑old Cockapoo from Grays, had become so anxious around grooming.

If you followed Winston’s journey, this is the framework behind those small but important steps.

SPARC helps us look beyond simply completing a groom and instead focus on how the dog experiences each stage of the process.

Safety, predictability, agency, resilience and care all work together — because progress happens when dogs feel secure enough to learn.

For those wanting to explore this approach in more depth, my Collaborative Care Guide for Professional Dog Groomers is available on Amazon.

Winston — final part of the journey 🐾

The bath had always been something to work through carefully, so this stage was about choice and confidence.

At first, Winston was given the freedom to step in and out of the bath at his own pace — no pressure, just space to think and decide. That first moment where he chose to jump in for himself mattered.

Later in the session, after drying on the floor, he made another important decision: for the first time, he chose to sit on the table.

By the following visit, he stayed there calmly through drying — a small change on the surface, but actually a huge step forward.

Progress like this rarely comes from rushing. It comes from repetition, predictability, and allowing the dog to feel safe enough to make choices. 💙

This year Just Think Dog has been recognised with three awards:

🏆 Dog Grooming Company of the Year (third year running)
🏆 Best Behaviour-Led Dog Grooming Salon 2026 – London
🏆 Welfare-Based Grooming Excellence Award 2026

We never do this work for trophies, but it does mean a great deal to have our calm, welfare-led approach recognised.

Every dog that walks through our door teaches us something, and every small step forward matters — especially for those dogs who need extra time, patience, and understanding.

Thank you to all our wonderful clients for trusting us with your dogs, and for supporting the way we choose to work: thoughtfully, gently, and always with welfare first. 💙
