It’s getting hot again!!

There’ll be no woodland walk this Sunday and all my other walks will be replaced by drop ins to keep all the doggos safe ☀️

Feels like it’s been ages since temperatures have allowed for group walks 😅

What did we do while it was too hot for walking (or any other prolonged outdoor activity)?

We worked on Lola’s paddling pool aversion. Was this needed? Absolutely not. But is this a good thing to keep us occupied for a few minutes here and there? Definitely.

Started with an empty pool, worked our way up to an inch of water by the evening - happy to call that a win!

It’s actually not the water she’s scared off, she quite likes a paddle in rivers and the sea. She gets nervous about strange surfaces. Then you add water to the mix and it’s all very scary. So this was a great opportunity for some confidence building.

As you can see by the pictures, baby steps did the trick and the paddling pool is no longer scary 🥳 bonus - Lola got to cool her toes off a little (there is actually water in the pool in pic 2)!!

Vet social visits - something that I don’t think enough people know about.

Dogs like Lola make it easy to ignore their discomfort. She has never snapped, growled or acted out in any other way. She freezes when she’s scared or uncomfortable. That’s not to say that she’d never react aggressively if she was in actual pain. But I think dogs like her often have their feelings ignored.

Therefore our main priority has been to have a relaxed dog in the examination room. She knows she can walk away from the vet. She knows if she hops onto the scales no one will touch her, she will just get a few treats.

Today we wantes to try a new approach. Instead of the vet reaching for Lola we made Lola “touch” the vet. I think anyone that has ever taught a dog “paw” has had the pleasure of finding out just how persistently they’ll slam their paws into you for a treat 😂😂 we used that to our advantage. A few “paws” later and having a tiny fake examination wasn’t even scary anymore. And when she had enough she walked away - and that’s completely okay!

It also massively helps that our vets are truly amazing, patient, and pay so much attention to dog body language!!

We had our first Woodland Walkie on Sunday! We had two social and two reactive dogs all happily walking in a group with enough space for everyone - and finished off with a coffee! The next walk will be on the 15th June 🐶

Early morning walk for Lola ☀️

She has been absolutely smashing her loose lead walking and has overall become much calmer!!

She’s gone from staring people down to not even giving most of them a single glance (the do not pet sticker is really helping here - I couldn’t believe how many people would just go straight in to pet her without a warning or a hello)…

Reactivity wise she’s definitely making improvements. Small dogs don’t bother her much anymore, she has even made a few friends. Big dogs are a different story - but even that’s getting better. We learned today that puppies are a big no no 😅

Now she’s off for a little camping holiday. See you in a few weeks Lola 🏕️

Lola had so much fun at her second Barnhunt workshop with Pawfect ability - dog training for all this weekend!

She’s currently wondering why she wasn’t allowed to take the rat tube home 😅
