Bodywork Isn’t Just for Injuries

Many people associate massage and bodywork with injury recovery, but it can be just as valuable as part of an ongoing wellness routine.

Just as we service our cars before something goes wrong, regular bodywork can help identify areas of tension before they become larger issues.

For performance horses and active dogs, bodywork can support flexibility, recovery and comfort. For older animals, it can help maintain mobility and quality of life. Even pets with no obvious concerns can benefit from regular assessments to ensure they are moving as comfortably as possible.

Prevention is often easier than correction.

By supporting the body before problems arise, we can help our animals stay happier, healthier and more comfortable for longer.

After all, our animals spend their lives looking after us. Looking after their bodies is one of the best ways we can return the favour.

A gentle reminder…

Our animals work hard for us.

Whether they’re competing, hacking, running, training or simply being a beloved family pet, their bodies carry them through every day.

Taking time to care for their wellbeing is one of the best gifts we can give them. 🐴🐶

People often ask why I do massage and bodywork for horses and dogs.

The simple answer is that I love helping animals feel more comfortable in their bodies.

What many people don’t realise is that a gentle, soft touch can create profound changes deep within the body. We don’t always need force to make a difference. The body is connected through a remarkable network called fascia – a continuous web of connective tissue that links muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and organs from head to tail. When there is tension, restriction or compensation in one area, it can affect movement and comfort elsewhere in the body.

This is why bodywork is so important. By working with the body’s tissues, we can help improve mobility, encourage relaxation, support recovery and enhance overall wellbeing.

Every animal is unique, which is why I assess each horse or dog before every session. Their body, movement patterns, workload, lifestyle and needs can change from day to day. The assessment helps me understand where they may be holding tension and allows me to tailor the treatment specifically to them.

After a session, animals often appear more relaxed, move more freely, stretch more, show improved posture, or simply seem more comfortable and settled. Every response is individual, but seeing an animal feel better in its own body is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

Our animals give us so much. Helping them move, feel and perform at their best is a privilege I never take for granted.

Can you spot the small changes?

As a therapist we are constantly looking at how your pet may stand, walk, run, looking for how they distribute their weight, hold their tail etc etc.

But as owners you can pick up on the small changes too.

Were they slower getting up today?
Was it a struggle to get in the car or on the bed?
Do they slow down after a walk?
Do they only lie in one position?

The list goes on, but even the smallest of change can tell us a lot of information. It’s why we re assess every session and it’s why we ask lots of questions !

Some days we work … some days we wait for trained human to give us scratches and relax 🤣

I will never get over how much this horse trusts me and allows me to do so much with him in such a short space of time. He really is proving to be a cracking boy (and a fantastic massage practice horse )

Not all tension is obvious 👀

Sometimes it shows up as:
• Shortened stride
• Subtle stiffness
• Changes in behaviour
• Uneven weight bearing

This is why assessment matters just as much as treatment.

Because what looks “small” can tell us something important 💚

And a cool slow motion of my crazy cocker gang 😂🐾

Why I do what I do 💚

I’ve always believed that animals communicate far more than we often give them credit for.

Massage therapy isn’t just about easing tension — it’s about listening, understanding, and supporting the whole animal.

No two sessions are ever the same, because no two animals — or days — are the same.

And that’s exactly how it should be 🐎🐾

“What are you actually feeling for?” — a question I get asked a lot 👀

During a session, I’m constantly assessing:
• Muscle tone
• Heat or inflammation
• Areas of restriction
• Subtle reactions from your animal

Sometimes the smallest response tells me the most.

That’s why I don’t follow a set routine — I follow them 🐾
