☀️Hot weather warning ☀️
It is expected to hit 27-30 degrees over the coming weekend. The risk of heat stroke depends on a few factors, such as age, breed and general health. However, at 27+ degrees this is considered a risk for all dog breeds of any age and condition.
Things to consider:
☀️ Dogs have a resting body temperature of 38.3 - 39.2 degrees. This is 1-2 degrees more than a human. If you have ever had a high temperature (38 degree+) you are reaching the average dogs resting temperature. So, imagine having a temperature then going for a run, with a winter coat on!
☀️ Dogs are adaptable, even the most bouncy and active individual can go a few days with limited exercise.
☀️ Walking in the shade at 27 degrees + is safer than the direct sun, but still poses great risk.
Here are a few tips to following:
☀️ If you are going to walk your dog try to aim for as early as possible, or as late as possible when the temperature is lower. Always avoid midday walking/exercise.
☀️ Never give an overheated dog ice cubes / ice cream. The sudden temperature change can be very dangerous. Instead, slowly and gently cover them in cool water. If they are showing signs of distress, call your vet immediately.
🚗 Dogs & cars during a heatwave 🚗
Every year, the British Veterinary Association report an increase in reports of dogs being rescued from hot cars. In 2024, it was reported over 20 dogs died from heat exhaustion, which is truly heart breaking.
🚗 A car with it's windows fully closed can reach up to 49 degrees when the weather is 27 degrees outside.
🚗 A car with it's windows down can still reach up to 40 degrees when the weather is 27 degrees outside.
Vets across the country try to highlight the dangers of leaving dogs in hot cars by sitting for 20 minutes in a car, with the windows up, and recording / documenting how this feels.
