☀️ Record-Breaking Heatwave Ahead: Essential Pet Safety Info 🐾
The Met Office has announced an exceptional spell of warm weather for the Bank Holiday weekend, with temperatures expected to hit 30°C on Saturday and potentially peak at a staggering 33°C by Monday in southern England and the Midlands.
If those numbers are reached, it could officially break the UK's all-time May temperature record, which has stood since 1922!
While we all love a bit of sunshine, this sudden spike is a lot for our pets to handle. Because dogs and cats can’t sweat like we do, keeping them safe requires a bit of planning.
Here is your essential heatwave checklist to keep them comfortable:
🚶♂️ The 5-Second Tarmac Test: Asphalt can get hot enough to burn delicate paws in seconds. Before heading out, touch the pavement with the back of your hand for 5 seconds. If it's too hot for you, it's far too hot for them. Stick to early morning or late evening strolls.
🏠 Keep Air Flowing (Safely):
Keep curtains closed on sun-facing windows to block out the greenhouse effect. If you have cats who love to sit on windowsills, ensure window restrictors are securely in place so they can't slip out while chasing a breeze.
💦 Hydration Stations: Place extra water bowls around the house, adding ice cubes to keep things chilled. You can even freeze pet-friendly treats (like low-salt stock or plain yogurt) into ice cube trays for a cooling afternoon snack.
❄️ The Cool-Down Routine: Invest in a pet cooling mat, or simply damp down a towel with cool (not freezing) water for them to rest on.
⚠️ Signs of Heatstroke to Watch For:
Heavy panting, excessive drooling, lethargy, bright red gums, or unsteadiness. If you suspect heatstroke, move your pet into the shade immediately, apply cool water to their fur, and contact your vet right away.
Enjoy the beautiful weekend, keep those blinds down, and let’s keep our furry roommates safe and cool! 🛋️🍦🐾🥰♥️
