East View Riding Centre UK

East View Riding Centre UK Set in the picturesque village of Chelwood Gate, East View Riding Centre has been proudly riding onto the Ashdown Forest since 1974.

A family-run yard now in its 3rd generation, our passion for horses and the great outdoors is at the heart of everything.

There’s something special about this stretch of woodland.
The sound of the stream, birds overhead, and bluebells quietly doing their thing.

It’s a place to slow down, breathe, and just be for a moment.

This is private land with a public footpath running through it, and we’re really happy to share it with walkers.

A small request while you’re here:
Please keep dogs on a lead at all times.

Our horses regularly move through these woods, and even the calmest dog can cause a situation in the wrong moment. Keeping dogs on leads helps protect them, the horses, and everyone enjoying the space.

Thanks for helping us keep it peaceful and safe for all 🌿

Happy Sunday morning,

A small request to drivers around Danehill/Chelwood Gate and the roads to Ashdown Forest 🐎

For more than 50 years, our riding centre on Tanyard Lane has taken horses and riders safely to Ashdown Forest. Most drivers we meet are incredibly kind — slowing down, waiting patiently and giving our horses space. We’re very grateful for that.

Unfortunately, recently we’ve seen an increase in cars speeding past horses, passing very close, and occasionally shouting abuse at our es**rt riders and customers. Horses are sensitive animals and can be easily startled by fast or loud traffic, which can quickly become dangerous for riders, drivers and the horses themselves.

The Highway Code (Rule 215) is very clear when passing horses:

🐎 Slow down
🐎 Pass at no more than 10mph
🐎 Leave at least 2 metres of space
🐎 Avoid revving your engine or using your horn
🐎 Be patient and follow any signals from our es**rts

Our es**rt riders are there specifically to help traffic pass safely. If they ask you to wait for a moment, it’s simply to make sure the road is safe for everyone.

We know being delayed for a few seconds can be frustrating, but a frightened horse can weigh half a tonne and react unpredictably. A little patience goes a very long way.

If anyone has concerns about how our rides are conducted, please pass safely first and then feel free to contact me directly as the proprietor — I’m always happy to have a respectful conversation.

If you live locally, we’d really appreciate you sharing this post so more people understand how to pass horses safely.

Thank you to the many drivers who already show care and consideration — you help us continue something that has been part of this community for over half a century.

It is with great sadness that we share the news that our beloved Nan - Edna Turner - who passed away peacefully on Sunday 18th January 2026 at 5:18, aged 91 at her home here at East View.

She was the heart and matriarch of our family and the soul of the farm. For many years she ran the fruit farm with its gooseberries, strawberries and raspberries, and over 50 years ago she opened what she always called a trekking centre — never a riding school — going on to own and care for more than 150 horses over her lifetime.

She was a feisty, strong, and hard-working woman who built a life and a livelihood through sheer determination alongside our longsuffering Grandfather, Peter.

Generations of customers, riders, friends and families knew her, worked with her, rode with her, and shared stories with her, and we wanted to let everyone who knew her know of her passing.

She is now sleeping with our granddad, whom we lost eight years ago in January 2018.

Thank you to everyone who supported her, the farm, and our family over the years. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Please contact a member of the family if you would like details of the funeral which will take place
11th February @ 11am

❄️ Riding Conditions Update – Ice & Cold Weather ❄️

Due to ice and the possibility of snow over the next few days, riding will continue as scheduled, but with strict safety adjustments in place.

For the safety of both horses and riders:
• 🐎 All rides will be at a slow walk only
• 🚫 No trotting or cantering
• ⚠️ Routes and pace will be adapted to ground conditions

Please be aware that conditions will be reviewed on a day-to-day basis, and safety will always be our utmost priority. Icy ground can be unpredictable, even when it appears safe.

Please dress warmly, allow extra time, and speak to a member of staff if you have any concerns on arrival.
We will continue to monitor conditions closely and will update you if anything changes.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

Why Prices Are Rising Across the Equine Industry — And What It Means for Riding Centres

The equine industry faces rising costs in forage, insurance, and veterinary services, exacerbated by inflation and staffing challenges. Riding centres must increase prices to ensure proper care for horses and fair compensation for staff. Despite these adjustments, the focus remains on maintaining safety and quality services for riders and horses....
