✅ Does your dog wear an ID tag?
Under the Control of Dogs Order 1992, every dog in a public place in England, Scotland or Wales must wear a tag that includes:
📍 Your name and address
🏡 Your postcode
📞 A phone number is optional, but highly recommended!
👉 This applies even if your dog is microchipped – the tag is still a legal requirement.
🚫 Don’t include your dog’s name
It’s not required, and many vets and dog professionals suggest leaving it off. Why? Because if someone steals your dog, knowing their name can make it easier to pass them off as their own.
🏷️ Example of a good tag:
Miss Yappily
22 Barkers Avenue
TW16 5HL
0207 7695346 (optional, but useful)
🐕🦺 Some dogs are exempt, including:
Registered Guide Dogs
Police, military, or customs dogs on duty
Dogs used in emergency rescue
Dogs working with livestock (cattle or sheep)
Gundogs while out working
Dogs used for vermin control
📌 Quick Summary:
✔️ Your dog legally needs an ID tag
✔️ It must show your name, address and postcode
✔️ Phone number is optional, but helpful
✔️ Dog’s name isn't needed – and best left off
