☀️A heat wave AND a bank holiday?☀️
Whilst we are all enjoying the sun, heatstroke is a real risk in this weather, particularly for elderly dogs and brachycephalic breeds such as bulldogs and frenchies. Following a few steps, and staying observant could save you an expected visit to us!
✨Only walk your dogs early before the temperature rises, or in the evening when it cools.
✨Provide fresh, cool water at all times
✨Don't let them lay in the sun
✨Move rabbit and guinea pigs hutches and runs into the shade
✨Keep windows and curtains closed to help keep your house cool
✨Provide frozen treats (ice cubes are fine for dogs!)
✨Encourage them to go in a cool paddling pool
✨Use cool mats and fans
Signs of heatstroke include❗️
Red or dark gums
Excessive panting
Collapse
Weakness or wobbliness
Drooling
Vomiting/diarrhoea
Heatstroke can be deadly, acting fast makes a huge difference to outcome.
Get them somewhere cool, pour plenty of cool water on them, and call us straight away!
Both of our practices are closed for routine appointments this Sunday and bank holiday Monday, however our Ripon Way hospital remains open 24/7 for emergency care, so please call us any time❤️
