Preparing your puppy for grooming success:
🐾Desensitization to grooming tools, sounds, smells and touch should be started very young. A good breeder, especially of long haired and curly coated breeds; will have started this process with the litter.
🐾You should also be doing some work at home as part of their training and in-between grooming introductions - such as teaching your dog to be calm on an elevated surface, gently holding the paws and face and rewarding any calm or still behaviour with their preferred treat or toy - increasing the duration each time once they've got the knack of it. Train for regular short sessions daily for 5-10 minutes so you keep their attention. One thing at a time so they aren't overwhelmed.
🐾Having the dryer or shower switched on in the background or on your TV/phone helps certain sounds become familiar and less scary over time. A cheap electric toothbrush is also a great tool to simulate clipper vibrations on the body. At first keep this running somewhere in sight, and slowly work your way towards gently going over your dog's body.
🐾Your puppy can be introduced to professional grooming as soon as their first set of vaccinations are complete. Do not wait until they are knotted to be groomed for the first time - this can damage their trust of grooming in the future as it can be both uncomfortable and overwhelming.
🐾Their first groom is less about the haircut and more about getting them used to the process in an unfamiliar environment- quiet and gentle bathing and brushing, drying with a small dryer, nail clip and a quick trim around the eyes, bum and feet with treats, play and praise to give your puppy a positive association.
All of these will help towards giving your puppy a safe and stress-less lifetime of grooms.
