Lovely to see the advice we’re giving is now backed up properly.

Neutering isn’t one-size-fits-all - it’s about the individual dog.

: We've updated our advice on neutering dogs & cats after reviewing latest evidence.

With BSAVA we encourage a contextualised approach when making decisions for or against the procedure, especially when it comes to male dogs.

Nearly May and I’m looking for “summer” boots because apparently the UK has cancelled spring again.

Still cold, still wet, still one puddle away from trench foot.

Recommendations please.

Love Dogs? Want to Work with Animals?

Dogworthy in West London is looking for a reliable volunteer assistant to help with our puppy and adult training classes. If you're passionate about dogs and eager to gain hands-on experience, this could be the perfect opportunity — but we need someone who can commit to at least one shift per week for a minimum of six months.

What You’ll Be Doing:
🐾 Helping set up and pack away after classes
🐾 Assisting clients during sessions (holding leads, offering guidance, taking pictures)
🐾 Taking part in teaching and learning hands-on skills
What We’re Looking For:

✔️ Reliability is key! Must be able to commit to at least one shift per week for six months
✔️ Conscientious, with good communication skills
✔️ Over 16 (preferably with your own transport)
✔️ Confident around both dogs and people
✔️ Bonus: A good sense of humour never hurts!

What You’ll Get in Return:
✨ Discounted dog training
✨ Valuable hands-on experience in a professional training environment
✨ References for future work or study opportunities

We would also love to hear from ready qualified trainers, ideally IMDT or APDT, as there is potentially a gap for a class trainer with us shortly as well.

New puppy in West London? 🐾

Start things off right with our simple 7-day at-home socialisation checklist — designed to help your puppy grow into a calm, confident dog in a busy city environment.

Over the week, focus on:

Short, positive exposure to everyday sounds
Gentle handling and grooming practice
Calm, supervised introductions to friendly dogs
Safe little trips out and about (Ealing, Hanwell and beyond)

It’s not about doing loads — it’s about doing things well. Small, positive experiences now can prevent anxiety and reactivity later on.

Need a bit of guidance?
We offer specialist puppy training and support to help you get it right from the start.

Meet Dave, a nervous Harrow rescue who lunged and barked at other dogs and struggled on walks.

We started with a full assessment, then built short, reward-based sessions tailored to his triggers — distance management, desensitisation exercises, high-value treats and clear, consistent cues.

Over six weeks Buddy’s threshold increased, walks became calmer and he now greets neighbours without reactive barking. That measurable progress came from patient, qualified behaviourist-led work and a plan his owners could repeat at home.

Wondering if professional help could make the same difference for your dog in West London or Ealing? Visit https://dogworthy.net/121services to book an assessment and let’s talk solutions. 🐾😊

Spotlight: 5 common behaviour problems — and kinder ways to fix them 🐾

At Dogworthy, we’ve worked with over 3,000 dogs across West London in the past 10 years — and one thing we know for sure: small wins add up quickly.

Here are 5 common struggles (and what to do instead):

1) Pulling on the lead
Reward your dog for walking nicely by your side, and stop moving when they pull. Short, consistent walks with lots of reinforcement make a big difference.

2) Separation anxiety
Start with really short absences, pair alone time with something positive (like a long-lasting treat), and build up gradually so your dog learns it’s safe.

3) Resource guarding
Avoid taking things away. Instead, teach “drop” using trades with better rewards, and build positive associations around people being near their items.

4) Excessive barking
Work out what’s triggering it, reward quiet behaviour, and teach an alternative like “sit and look” to interrupt the pattern.

5) Poor recall
Make coming back to you the best part of your dog’s day — use high-value rewards, keep it fun, and practise in low-distraction areas before progressing.

We regularly work with owners in Ealing, Harrow and Hillingdon — and these simple changes really do work when you stay consistent.

Wise words!

Wise words!

These are just some of the comments I hear from owners all the time.

Dogs are incredibly good at hiding pain. It’s an instinct - showing weakness makes them vulnerable. So instead, they carry on. They run, they chase, they play… even when something doesn’t feel right.
Just because your dog is active on walks does NOT mean they’re pain free.

Pain can show up in more subtle ways:
⚠️ Changes in behaviour
⚠️ Becoming reactive or snappy
⚠️ Reluctance to be touched in certain areas
⚠️ Stiffness after rest or intermittent limping
⚠️ Slower to get up or lie down
⚠️ Less tolerance for other dogs or people
⚠️ Seeming grumpy or withdrawn
⚠️ Pacing instead of trotting
⚠️ Restlessness and difficulty getting comfortable

That reactivity you’re seeing? That sudden change in behaviour? It is not a “bad behaviour” - it is your dog trying to say, “something hurts.”

As owners, it’s easy to focus on what we see (running, playing, excitement), but it’s just as important to notice the subtle changes.

Listen to the small signs. Your dog can’t tell you in words, but they are always communicating. Please do not ignore them 🐶🐾
