Did you know there is a dog that physically cannot bark? The Basenji — one of the oldest dog breeds in the world — is completely bark-free. Instead, they produce a remarkable sound known as a "barroo", a sort of yodel unique to the breed that you really have to hear to believe.

Basenjis have been around for thousands of years. They appear in ancient Egyptian artefacts and were originally bred as hunting dogs in Central Africa. Away from their ancient history, they have a very modern quirk: they are fastidious self-groomers, cleaning themselves much like cats do. Distinctive, intelligent, and full of character.

At AlphaB, we work with dogs of all breeds — from the most common to the wonderfully unusual. Do you own a Basenji, or have you ever come across one? Tell us in the comments — we'd love to hear from you, and feel free to tag a friend who'd find this as fascinating as we do!

Here's a question that might surprise you: when did your dog last have a proper day off?

Not a shorter walk. Not a quiet afternoon. A full rest day — no training, no trips to busy places, no stimulating activities. Just nothing.

Rest days are one of the most underused tools in dog training, and yet they can make a real difference to how your dog learns, behaves, and feels. When dogs are constantly active or stimulated, their cortisol and adrenaline levels stay elevated. Over time, this can lead to chronic stress — and dogs who are chronically stressed become harder to train, more reactive, and perpetually in search of the next rush of stimulation.

There are two types of rest day worth knowing about. A complete rest day means no walks, no formal training, no exciting games — your dog is encouraged to fully switch off. An active rest day means avoiding anything arousing or stressful — no triggers, no busy environments — but might include calm garden time or very gentle mental engagement.

Both types matter. And both benefit you as much as your dog.

If your dog is high-drive, reactive, or just always "on", a regular rest day — ideally at least once a fortnight, and ideally once a week — can be genuinely transformative.

Has your dog had a rest day recently? Let us know in the comments — we'd love to hear how you wind things down at home.

Board and Train isn't only for when life gets busy. Sometimes it's simply the right approach.

When a dog and owner learn together from scratch, both can be figuring things out at the same time — and that can slow progress for both. Our Board and Train programme separates the learning, so your dog gets to work with an experienced trainer, building skills and confidence without either of you second-guessing each other in the process.

While your dog is working with us, you're actively involved too. You'll receive regular videos showing your dog's progress, along with detailed written messages covering the exact handling and communication techniques being used — so you're learning right alongside them, just at your own pace. You can even send us your own videos practising those techniques at home, with or without your dog, and we'll give you feedback so your skills are sharp and ready for when it matters.

By the time you're reunited, you're not starting from scratch together — you each arrive prepared. That's what makes the difference.

Whether you're looking for a genuine training transformation, a progress boost, or simply a smarter way to build your skills alongside your dog's, our residential programme is designed to work.

Programmes run from two to eight weeks and start from £1,400, with finance available via Clearpay.

Reactivity is one of the most misunderstood behaviours in dogs — and one of the most common reasons owners feel overwhelmed, frustrated, or even embarrassed on walks.

The truth is, a reactive dog isn't a bad dog. Reactivity is a communication — your dog telling you they're struggling with something in their environment. Understanding *why* they react is the first step to real, lasting change.

At AlphaB Dog Training, we work with reactive dogs regularly. Our approach is rooted in understanding each dog as an individual — because no two dogs react for exactly the same reason, and no two training journeys should look the same. We believe strongly in empowering owners throughout the process; you're not just handed a set of instructions, you're an active part of your dog's progress.

If you've been told your dog is "just aggressive" or "too far gone," we'd respectfully disagree.

If you've ever wished someone could just take your dog out and work on the training at the same time — that's exactly what our Walk & Train service is.

One of our trainers collects your dog, works with them throughout the walk, and returns them home tired, stimulated, and having made genuine progress. You'll receive footage from the session so you can see exactly what was covered, and ongoing WhatsApp support is included so you can carry on the work between visits.

It's an ideal option for owners who are short on time, finding walks stressful, or simply want professional input built into their dog's daily routine. Every session is tailored — because no two dogs are the same, and neither are their needs.

No rigid programmes. No one-size-fits-all approach. Just honest, consistent work delivered by a team that genuinely cares about the results.

New and existing customers welcome. Dogs of all breeds welcome.
All bookings are made via our website: www.alphabdogtraining.co.uk — or feel free to drop us a message if you have any questions before booking.

We’ve just seen a dog in a car window on a heatwave day here in the UK. The photo shows what looks like a small, long-haired breed (resembling a Pekingese). We’re urgently trying to locate the owner. Please share and tag anyone who might know them so we can help this dog get to safety quickly.

AlphaB Dog Training — urgent alert:
🔎 We’ve spotted the dog in a car. If you recognise the vehicle or the owner, please tag them in the comments and share this post immediately.
🧭 Location details: body tech gym Ellesmere Port !
🤝 Help us reunite this dog with its owner as soon as possible.

Why this matters:
☀️ Heatwave conditions can become dangerous inside a car within minutes.
🐶 Dogs cannot regulate heat as humans do; risk of heat stroke is real.

Safety tips (for everyone):
- Never leave a dog unattended in a vehicle, even with windows cracked.
- If you must wait for the owner, keep the dog in a shaded, well-ventilated area and offer water if appropriate.
- If you believe a dog is in immediate distress, call 999 (emergency services) or your local police/RSPCA right away.
- If you’re able to help safely, document the vehicle details (make/model/plate) and the time, and report to authorities.

Questions for the community:
- Have you ever encountered a dog left in a car during hot weather? What actions did you take?
- What signs of distress should bystanders look for in a dog in a vehicle?

Call to action:
Please like, share, and comment with any information that could help us locate the owner and get this dog to safety.

AlphaB Dog Training remains committed to canine welfare. If you’re a dog owner preparing for hot weather, we’re offering quick safety tips and guidance—DM us for resources.

Looking for structured, supportive training in a safe and controlled environment? Our group sessions are designed for dogs of all ages, breeds, and abilities, helping both dogs and owners build confidence, skills, and real-world success together.

Why group training?
Training around other dogs and people creates valuable learning opportunities that simply can’t be replicated at home. Dogs learn to focus, remain calm, and work through distractions while owners gain confidence handling their dogs in realistic situations. Group work also helps improve neutrality, engagement, social skills, and overall communication between dog and handler.

In our group sessions we work on:
✔️ Obedience and engagement
✔️ Handling skills
✔️ Cooperative care
✔️ Play skills
✔️ Marker systems and communication
✔️ Building confidence and neutrality around distractions

🌍 Exposure Walks
Our exposure walks take training into the real world. We regularly change locations and environments to help dogs experience new sights, sounds, people, and situations in a safe and structured way. This helps build resilience, confidence, and calm behaviour in everyday life.

🚶 Neutral Walks
Neutral walks are a fantastic next step for dogs already progressing in training. A trainer takes your dog out in a structured group setting, working on calmness and neutrality around other dogs without the pressure of interaction. These walks help dogs learn to coexist calmly, stay engaged with the handler, and make better choices around distractions.

👣 Trailing Club
Our trailing club is incredible fulfilment for dogs, tapping into their natural instincts and love of scent work. Dogs work as a team with their handler to locate a hidden person, combining problem-solving, confidence building, teamwork, and mental enrichment in a fun and rewarding activity.

🐕 Play Groups
Our supervised play groups are carefully structured to ensure dogs are matched appropriately based on size, play style, confidence, and temperament. These sessions are overseen by a trainer who monitors interactions, steps in when needed, helps owners better understand canine communication, and ensures play remains safe, balanced, and beneficial for every dog involved.

Whether you’re just starting your training journey or looking to progress your dog further, we have something to suit every team 🐾
