All being well, The Bond Girls will need their new wild homes at the end of the month 🙂
Please read the info below and get in touch if you already have wild hedgehogs visiting.
What constitutes a hedgehog friendly garden?
Below is a list with how you can help them and how to create a safe environment.
🦔 Access to your garden. Create a 13cm x 13cm gap (hedgehog highway) in your fence or gate, link to your neighbours garden too.
🏠 Build or buy a hedgehog nesting box an fill with dust extracted barley straw.
💦 Provide shallow bowls of fresh water in your open spaces, all year round.
🦔 Support feed at dusk with cat/kitten biscuits or wet cat/dog food.
🍂 Leave piles of leaves to nest or forage in.
🌳 Let an area of your garden grow wild.
🌷 Plant flowers and shrubs in your garden, attracting insects.
🪵 Build a log pile.
👀 Checking overgrown areas before strimming or mowing.
🦔 Compost heaps are perfect for hedgehogs to nest or forage in. Check thoroughly before turning over with a fork.
🐕 Supervise your dog at night or keep them on a lead for their night time wee.
🥅 Keep all netting raised off the ground (1 foot or above) or stored away when not in use.
☠ Do not use any chemicals and keep any stored away safely.
🔥 Check or move bonfires before lighting.
🗑 Put refuse sacks in lidded bins and place all litter in a bin. Garden waste and recycling waste stored at height and off the ground or in placed in a secure building.
🦔 Make ponds/pools safe by creating a pebbled shore to one end or put in a ramp on the edge.
🕳 Keep drains/holes or groundworks covered over or provide an escape ramp.
❤️🦔🐾
With massive thanks to the super wonderful Trace at Harbour Hedgie Rescue for letting me use her excellent list.
