Liz Horner Riding Coach

Liz Horner Riding Coach Liz is a BHS registered, fully insured, Freelance Riding instructor based in the Selby/ Goole area o Welcome to ‘Liz Horner Riding Lessons’. Afraid of jumping?

Confused what a half halt means? Frustrated that you can’t work your horse in a consistent outline without lots of gadgets? Fed up of instructors that just shout and never listen? Frightened of asking those silly questions and never really understanding? My aim is to give instruction that is a little different, being a patient instructor that will take you and your horse back to basics using the ‘

Scales of Training’, allowing you to work together as a team
All levels of riders / horses taken for flatwork/ dressage/ jumping. Also available for schooling/ holiday cover. Liz offers a professional, knowledgeable service that is perhaps slightly different to the ‘traditional instructor’, being patient and calm, allowing the rider to ask those questions they’ve never dared to ask before like “what is a half halt?”. Liz’s goal is to allow her riders to understand exactly why things are going wrong and how they can begin correcting problems, in a logical, easy to understand way. “We’ve all had months of ‘banging our heads against a wall’ feeling that we are never going to get that correct canter lead or keep our hands up and still, while the horse works in an outline.”

Liz will teach you the ‘classical way’ of working your horse, moving up the ‘Scales of Training’ while also concentrating on you as a rider – “after all your horse can’t work properly if you are sitting incorrectly!” It’s amazing how quickly riders can feel more confident and positive about their riding without the use of gadgets, allowing horse and rider to work in harmony. Are you nervous handling or riding your horse? Or do you suffer from competition nerves or hate jumping specific fences (eg ditches, tables)? If the answer is ‘yes’ please read on! Neuro linguistic programming (NLP) is a powerful tool that utilizes a range of methods to change how people cope under such stressful situations, making them put those negative, demoralising thoughts to one side and focus on positive, uplifting thoughts. The different techniques employed by me include the use of language, anchoring techniques, swish and visualisation patterns often alongside hypnosis. By harnessing the power of the mind to produce positive rather than negative thoughts, we can improve personal performance by generating a positive circle of success rather than the negative, viscous circle of doubt. By training the mind we allow the rider to enter a ‘positive zone’ immediately and whenever they feel negative and allow them to perform at their best, no matter what the context (both on and off the horse and in other stressful times too). As a fellow horse rider I understand the needs of clients. Indeed I suffered from a crisis of confidence when preparing for my Stage 3 BHS jumping exams. In despair I turned to self-hypnosis and NLP techniques. I realised how powerful these techniques can be and passed my exams with flying colours! If you decide that you need my help, please contact me about the different packages I can offer. Most of the sessions would be performed off the horse in a mutually convenient, comfortable place that allows you to totally relax and give 100% concentration to the techniques. Be prepared to come with an open mind, work hard and you must be determined to change! For information please visit my website: www.thehorseridingcoach.co.uk

Yet another hot day & another competition day 🥵! We got to Manor Grange Stud & immediately gave Darcey plenty of water over his body to help keep him cool (& wash him 😉😆). Then I attempted to pull on my show stuff - flipping heck it was hard it stuck to me 😆. Then a short warm up & two tests with more water splashed over Darc inbetween tests plus water to drink for us both. He was ever so good once again with us able to complete our qualification tests for PetPlan champs.
✴️please note that Darcey is very fit, I double checked that the motorway journey was clear before setting off in either direction so that I knew we shouldn’t get caught in traffic (we are less than half an hour from the venue & literally all motorway with plenty of water on board if needed.) Not once did he start to struggle with the heat, with him offered (& drank) water plus recovery mash afterwards as well as plenty of water splashed on him throughout the time we were at the venue. We left straight after our second test- no hanging around ✴️

A fantastic if very hot day today 🥵 at our 2nd WE regional. Darcey came off the box in a much better frame of mind, doing a good dressage test, followed an hour later by a super EOH (NO big bloopers today 😉). EOH test below. By the end of both tests we were joint first. On to the speed, where he sadly showed his greenness by dropping the rope gate & struggling to get hold of it again for ages - precious time wasted! But we did finish & ended up 3rd overall - which is fabulous! So excited for this horse’s future!

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

I am wondering if there is a desire for a small group of riders to be able to meet & support each other to learn together? There are several things that I have learnt over the years, especially with age 🤦‍♀️. Riding can be both a supportive amazing sport, or one that is very lonely & dog eat dog world! As we grow older our perspective changes & things that never bothered us suddenly become the biggest obstacle ever, stopping us from getting what we want in life, causing us to shrink into ourselves.
WE is a sport that provides support & guidance. Although daunting at the start it really is good fun & gives you challenges for your riding that can be used out there in day to day life, but also test your skills in the ring. Therefore, with a handful of competitions organised in Yorkshire for the coming few months, is there interest in riders joining a small group of likeminded riders to find out more about this sport - possibly moving on to compete this year or next (but not compulsory!). If needed we can work on confidence & mindset issues (Inspirider) as well as discovering skills required for the sport, as well as supporting & socialising. Comment below/ DM the page for more info/ tag anyone you may feel would benefit.

This year in July I will running a The Association for British Working Equitation regional competition at Manor Grange Stud near Knottingley, followed by a second in September at Mill Lane Stables, Selby. Are there any businesses / people that would like to sponsor a class? Either as money towards rosettes or the gift of prizes in kind?

It was a return to BD yesterday with our first go at affiliated Novice with ‘Dance on Darcey’. He still needs mileage in a busy warm up arena as he tends to lose his focus with other horses & wants to check out what they are all doing 🤦‍♀️. But his actual tests are really coming on, with him gaining one qualification score in our outing. (And it stayed dry too 🥳).
