Liz Horner Riding Coach

Liz Horner Riding Coach Liz is a BHS registered, fully insured, Freelance Riding instructor based in the Selby/ Goole area o Welcome to ‘Liz Horner Riding Lessons’. Afraid of jumping?

Confused what a half halt means? Frustrated that you can’t work your horse in a consistent outline without lots of gadgets? Fed up of instructors that just shout and never listen? Frightened of asking those silly questions and never really understanding? My aim is to give instruction that is a little different, being a patient instructor that will take you and your horse back to basics using the ‘

Scales of Training’, allowing you to work together as a team
All levels of riders / horses taken for flatwork/ dressage/ jumping. Also available for schooling/ holiday cover. Liz offers a professional, knowledgeable service that is perhaps slightly different to the ‘traditional instructor’, being patient and calm, allowing the rider to ask those questions they’ve never dared to ask before like “what is a half halt?”. Liz’s goal is to allow her riders to understand exactly why things are going wrong and how they can begin correcting problems, in a logical, easy to understand way. “We’ve all had months of ‘banging our heads against a wall’ feeling that we are never going to get that correct canter lead or keep our hands up and still, while the horse works in an outline.”

Liz will teach you the ‘classical way’ of working your horse, moving up the ‘Scales of Training’ while also concentrating on you as a rider – “after all your horse can’t work properly if you are sitting incorrectly!” It’s amazing how quickly riders can feel more confident and positive about their riding without the use of gadgets, allowing horse and rider to work in harmony. Are you nervous handling or riding your horse? Or do you suffer from competition nerves or hate jumping specific fences (eg ditches, tables)? If the answer is ‘yes’ please read on! Neuro linguistic programming (NLP) is a powerful tool that utilizes a range of methods to change how people cope under such stressful situations, making them put those negative, demoralising thoughts to one side and focus on positive, uplifting thoughts. The different techniques employed by me include the use of language, anchoring techniques, swish and visualisation patterns often alongside hypnosis. By harnessing the power of the mind to produce positive rather than negative thoughts, we can improve personal performance by generating a positive circle of success rather than the negative, viscous circle of doubt. By training the mind we allow the rider to enter a ‘positive zone’ immediately and whenever they feel negative and allow them to perform at their best, no matter what the context (both on and off the horse and in other stressful times too). As a fellow horse rider I understand the needs of clients. Indeed I suffered from a crisis of confidence when preparing for my Stage 3 BHS jumping exams. In despair I turned to self-hypnosis and NLP techniques. I realised how powerful these techniques can be and passed my exams with flying colours! If you decide that you need my help, please contact me about the different packages I can offer. Most of the sessions would be performed off the horse in a mutually convenient, comfortable place that allows you to totally relax and give 100% concentration to the techniques. Be prepared to come with an open mind, work hard and you must be determined to change! For information please visit my website: www.thehorseridingcoach.co.uk

It was a return to BD yesterday with our first go at affiliated Novice with ‘Dance on Darcey’. He still needs mileage in a busy warm up arena as he tends to lose his focus with other horses & wants to check out what they are all doing 🤦‍♀️. But his actual tests are really coming on, with him gaining one qualification score in our outing. (And it stayed dry too 🥳).

To be a BHS APC we have undergo CPD. This year i decided to attend the British Dressage Northern conference. It was a fascinating day with many non- professional riders demonstrating, so useful tips for grassroots riders. I think the major take home for me was that even at the lower levels, you can still focus always on preparing for the higher levels, as those foundations are needed when the advanced moves come. For example. ensuring your horse ‘sits’ & uses the backend through the downward transitions is so important as you gain collection at higher levels & why ignore it - make this part of the ‘norm’ at those lower levels.

So two weeks ago I was at the Working Equitation champs & we got to have a go at the cattle phase (the 4th phase at international level). Held in it’s own right as an extra day after the official competition,
we had a careful & slow acclimatisation with the cows. The idea is to ‘cut’ your cow from the herd & herd it up the arena & into the pen. It wasn’t Bronte’s most favourite activity 🫣 but we did manage to cut out our numbered cow & move it at a very slow walk up to the pen at the top of the arena, with the help of our team mates who couldn’t help until the cow moved over the white line you can see in the first photo. All other cows must be kept below the white line. It was a fantastic experience.

Wow what a busy few days at the end of year Working Equitation champs - four days of fun & laughter. Shame everyone was congratulating me on keeping a lid on madam rather than our performance 🤦‍♀️ - she has been anything but easy for four days.
Here’s our speed round which honestly I had zero brakes & steering 🤷‍♀️. In the speed anything goes - speed is key, how doesn’t matter but to get round without knocking anything (10 seconds added if you do knock things down). As you can see we had to go very slowly at the vara as Bronte has been rather temperamental this last week with it 🤦‍♀️.
Thank you to everyone who wished us luck. If you would like to know more, get in touch. Next WE clinic won’t be before Christmas although I am still available for freelance work where obstacles can be discussed & gone thru.

Please note I am away at the Working Equitation Champs from tomorrow, so will not be contactable until Monday.

Wow what a busy but incredible weekend of Working Equitation! Saturday was a WE clinic for all levels - we had newcomers up to those competing the following day. Sunday I ran the regional competition for The Association for British Working Equitation which was a huge success except for the rather soggy ending! Luckily we did have the indoor for shelter & to warm up in once the dressage was finished, tho obstacles had to run outside. TBH there was a nice vibe going on in there!Thank you so much to all the helpers of the day - I honestly could not have done it without you (Elaine, Millie, Will Alan for getting soaked, Alison, Colleen, Vicki & Gaz). Special thank you to my ever suffering hubby Alan who literally came out Saturday am to help set up, again even earlier Sunday morning, then back later to help, got soaked but kept going & put everything back in the box to take home in the absolute downpour.
Also thank you to the sponsors once again Cottingham Equestrian Centre & Inspirider for the rosettes. Fantastic prizes from Elaine Sutcliffe - Intelligent Bitting & Handling & lastly to Susannah Moore of The Hairycobrider (it won’t tag u 🤬) for the great goodie bags.
Lastly thanks to our judge for the day Shona Hill & our northern rep Karen Smith (again not tagging you all 🤬😂).
Thanks ever so much everyone for attending this weekend. The world of Working Equitation is ever expanding up north! Get in touch if you would like to know more - we really are a friendly lot!
