I have an announcement to make, Shay and I have just welcomed a beautiful baby girl into our life! Saphire was born on the 20th March and we are besotted.

You may have noticed I've been more quiet lately, and selective on some of the behaviour cases I've taken on for the last few months, and for a good reason.

Naturally I'll be taking some time off for maternity leave, but don't worry, I will be back to work and training dogs before you know it!

Happy Easter!! ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฃ๐Ÿชบ I hope you're all having a great Easter weekend

How do you prepare for taking your dog for a walk?

Did you know slowing down the process will help calm your dog down and help their mindset before you leave the house?

This can help reduce pulling on the lead and overexcitment just by changing how you get ready.

Be mindful of how you are setting the tone and lead by example! ๐Ÿฆฎ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ

Playing tug that mimics prey behaviour will increase the dogs drive towards the game. Being more unpredictable with your movements (being careful not to jolt them too hard) alongwith brief pauses is a more accurate way to mimic prey behaviour, leading to a more exciting game and a more interested player!

As you can see, Nelson is nice and loose here, but a dog that had tension in the body during tug I would be even more gentle with. Respond appropriately to the type of tug the dog is giving you in order to give them the most rewarding and the safest game possible.

This is great for puppies, insecure dogs who need a confidence boost as well as those high drive dogs who have preydrive needs.

Play fun and play safe!

Teaching Jess, a working Border Collie how to engage and disengage.

She's known to chase horses so this is her chance to practise in a safe and manageable way.

Alongside teaching a reliable recall, this is a good way for her to practise managing the intensity of the Border Collie obsessiveness in her herding and preydrive needs.

In some cases, throwing a ball just doesnt cut it, nor does increasing general exercise. She needs the controlled skills to be able to make the choice herself as well as with direction.

Another productive Recall Training Session with Jess the Border Collie (and special guest Izzy the Cockerpoo! ๐Ÿพ), it's so fulfilling to witness her growth and pinpoint areas where she needs improvement, so we can adapt the training strategy as Jess advances.

Keeping up with a Border Collie is always fun!
