Meet Wookiee wearing his new canine Milo vagal nerve stimulator!

Earlier this year, Wookiee began having seizures that were frightening and life-changing for him and his family. They had already lived through epilepsy with another much-loved dog, so they knew how difficult it can be.

This summer, Wookiee became one of the first patients at the Glasgow Seizure Clinic to receive the new Milo Vagal Nerve Stimulator (VNS). The surgery itself was quick and straightforward, and he recovered without any problems.

It’s still early days; these devices take time to adjust, and we need to wait and see how well it helps Wookiee in the long term. Already, though, his family have noticed some encouraging changes: he’s more engaged, playing again, and back to enjoying his walks.

Thanks to a collaboration with the Epilepsy Clinic at Langford Vets Small Animal Referral Hospital Langford Vets University of Bristol we’re pleased to be able to offer the Milo VNS as a treatment option for dogs with epilepsy, and we look forward to learning more about how it can help our patients over time.

His owner told us:
💬 ‘Early days with the VNS but already I am happy with the progress. I can’t recommend the VNS enough. It improves the life of many epileptic dogs.’

This gorgeous Ragdoll is Beau who spent several weeks with us over summer after being diagnosed with otogenic meningoencephalitis (a serious inner ear and brain infection). To help him recover Beau underwent a ventral bulla osteotomy (VBO) which is a delicate ear surgery.

During his stay, Beau needed lots of medications (which we had to get creative with and hide them in his favourite treats). As he was in with us for so long, it was important to make sure he stayed active, happy and beautifully groomed - after all, that coat deserves to stay silky and mat-free!

Here's a lovely photo of one of our OOH VCA's, Sophie making sure Beau had plenty of time to explore the ward while also keeping up with his pampering.

We're so proud of Beau's progress and of our dedicated team of clinicians, nurses and VCA's who care for every patient in the hospital.

🐾 Benji’s Journey: A Story of Strength and Recovery
A couple of weekends ago, Benji faced a sudden and frightening health crisis when his back legs stopped working. His dedicated owners rushed him to emergency care, and soon after, our team at the Glasgow University Small Animal Hospital was entrusted with his case. His owner has kindly shared Benji's story below:

"A couple of weekends ago our worst fears came true when Benji’s back legs stopped working. We rushed him to the out of hours vets in Glasgow where an initial assessment confirmed what we had dreaded and that Benji likely had Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). Given it was Sunday night they could only give him pain medications and keep him comfortable until a referral could be made to the hospital.

On Monday morning, we had a call to say that Glasgow University Small Animal Hospital agreed to take Benji’s case so we rushed to transport him there to ensure he could get seen to asap. An incredibly helpful and kind Neurologist, Chris, talked us through the likely diagnosis and prognosis for Benji and once we agreed a route forward, he took Benji for an MRI followed quickly by spinal surgery to correct the issue. Luckily we were able to visit Benji while he was in recovery which I think really helped both of us but also our wee Benji.

A few days later we were able to take Benji back home and we then started his recovery with physiotherapy and learning to utilise a pelvic harness to let him go outside until his back legs regained mobility.

After a few weeks we returned with Benji to visit the Chris for a further assessment and he was very happy with his progress and since then we have been slowly increasing his walking on different surface types and he is showing great progress.

It’s been amazing getting to see our wee Benji returning to his usual character again and we are so happy with the treatment he received and the kind support the staff at the Small Animals Hospital gave us. Thank you!!"
