Are you a parent of a young child, a pet caregiver, or both? 🐶🐱👶

A University of Glasgow postgraduate researcher is conducting a study on how caregivers use, trust, and accept nutritional guidance for children and pets. If you're aged 18+ and care for a child aged 0–10 years or a dog/cat, your insights would be incredibly valuable!

🐾 Patient Story: Hugo the Bulldog 🐾

We’re sharing a heartfelt story from one of our recent patients, Hugo — a 6-year-old English Bulldog who was admitted to the Small Animal Hospital with aspiration pneumonia. His owner kindly shared the journey in their own words:

“Hugo is a 6 year old English Bulldog who unfortunately ended up at the Small Animal Hospital due to suffering from aspiration pneumonia. He took unwell whilst he was on holiday in Wales, we thought he was getting better but later found out that pneumonia can take up to a week to present symptoms.

We took him to our own vet when we returned to Glasgow, however he was very poorly and was transferred to the animal hospital so they could look after him overnight. He was kept in ICU on oxygen for a few days, but luckily by the end of the week he had made a remarkable progress and we were able to take him home to continue his recovery.

It turns out swallowing lots of sea water whilst paddling on Llanddwyn Beach in Anglesey was the main culprit. We would like to thank the Small Animal Hospital especially Dr Molly Gunning for taking such good care of Hugo over what was a very worrying week.”

We’re so pleased to hear Hugo is back home and on the mend. 💙 Thank you to his family for trusting us with his care — and to Dr Molly Gunning and our ICU team for their dedication during a critical time.

🐶 Client Story: Mello’s Journey 🐶

We’re grateful to share the story of Mello, a 1-year-old Cavalpoochon puppy who faced a tough health challenge and showed incredible resilience. Her owner shares:

“Our 1 year old Cavalpoochon puppy Mello woke up one morning and just didn't seem like herself. Within a few hours she had been sick, followed by projectile vomit and very bad diarrhea filled with blood. Of course it was a Sunday and our vet wasn't open, so we made a phone call straight to the Small Animal Hospital at the University of Glasgow.

The veterinary nurse was great on the phone, asked a number of questions about Mello and what had happened that morning and then suggested it would be best to have her looked at by one of the hospital vets.

We made our way up to the animal hospital, which was easy to find and such a nice building / reception area. It was the first time we had witnessed animal triage, which was refreshing, as it meant the animals that needed urgent care were seen first. Unfortunately we were chosen first, which is the one time in life you'd rather stay waiting.

The vet nurse was great, took note of all of Mello's vitals and symptoms. Before long, we were with the vet. The vet reviewed Mello's vitals and took a lot of time to understand Mello, what she's usually like, why today has been different, her routine, her diet, etc. In the end, the vet requested that she was admitted. Of course, when your sick pet is asked to be admitted to hospital, your heart sinks a little, but the staff at the hospital were great at explaining why they suggested this course of action and the process to follow.

We called around 10pm to check in on Mello and the staff gave us a good update as to how she was and what the plan was overnight. Unfortunately this was the start of a very bad gastro bug for Mello that lasted 6 weeks. A week after being in hospital, she took another dip, resulting in us calling the hospital at 4am for advice. Again, the person we spoke to was amazing, thorough and calming, exactly what is needed in these difficult times.

Very happy to report that she is back fighting fit, loving her park walks and chasing sticks. At least one of us hasn't noticed winter is coming. Thanks to all at the Small Animal Hospital for everything you do.”

We’re so pleased to hear Mello is back to her playful self. Thank you to her family for sharing this heartfelt journey 💙

🐾 Client Story: Meet Teddy 🐾

We’re honoured to share the story of Teddy, a brave 4-year-old Cavalier King Charles who’s been part of our Small Animal Hospital family for several years. His owner shares:

“Teddy is our 4 year old Cavalier King Charles. He is our 3rd Cavalier however at around 6 months of age we noticed Teddy had some health issues and he was taken to our vet who referred him to the Small Animal Hospital.

After extensive testing he was diagnosed with a rare kidney disorder called Fanconi. Since then he has had further health concerns and been diagnosed with Chiari Malformation and he has dietary issues due to being allergic to many foods and is now on an allergenic diet.

Throughout the past 4 years Teddy is a regular visitor to the animal hospital where he is treated with care and kindness. He loves how he sees his ‘own’ regular clinician as this reduces the anxiety for him during these visits. Staff are wonderful. They explain everything that is going to happen and truly appear to care for Teddy when he comes for his check ups.

Teddy was even referred for genetic testing to a clinic in Switzerland by the animal hospital team to further their information about his rare condition and we were kept informed about the results which was helpful and interesting.

I would highly recommend the Small Animal Hospital for your fur babies and am very grateful for all they do for mine.”

Thank you to Teddy’s family for sharing his journey. We’re proud to support him every step of the way 💙

🐾 From the Small Animal Hospital: Meet Ralf! 🐶

Ralf is a Romanian rescue with a remarkable DNA mix—19 breeds including German Shepherd, Central Asian Shepherd… and a cheeky 4% Chihuahua! He arrived in Scotland in 2019, tired but grateful for a warm home after years on the streets.

With no training and a strong chase instinct, Ralf began obedience classes in 2020 with the KDDTC -Kirkintilloch and District Dog Training Club , a not-for-profit organisation run entirely by passionate volunteers. Their dedication helped Ralf thrive—he earned his senior advanced obedience award in 2023!

Ralf’s adventures include climbing 57 Munros and camping with his beloved pack. But earlier this year, his active lifestyle caught up with him. After struggling with lameness, he was referred to SAH Orthopaedic Specialist James Phillips. A CT scan revealed elbow dysplasia, arthritis, mild hip dysplasia, and a likely soft tissue injury.

Thanks to a personalised treatment plan—including anti-inflammatory medication, pain relief, and a carefully managed exercise routine—Ralf has made a fantastic recovery. His trainers now call him a “new dog”! We’re keeping a close eye on his condition, but he’s back to enjoying forest walks and living life to the fullest.
Ralf’s story is a testament to resilience, expert care, and the power of second chances. 🐕❤️
