Meet the lovely Misty, you may remember her from a previous post in 2021 following surgery for Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD).

🔍 What is IVDD?
A spinal condition where the discs (soft cushions between the bones of the spine) can degenerate or shift, pressing on nerves and leading to pain, weakness, and reduced mobility.

Her owners have been managing her diligently since surgery and Misty visits routinely as part of her ongoing maintenance care to support her comfort and keep her moving well long term as she approaches her senior years🐾💛

Meet the lovely Dexter💙 .

We have been treating Dexter for a number of years after surgery to fix his cruciate ligament and manage his arthritis. Unfortunately, after injuring his other cruciate ligament in October, Dexter initially couldn’t bear weight on his affected hindlimb. Due to his age his owner opted for conservative management (no surgery) this time but this did led to compensatory tension through his back.

With consistent physiotherapy and a fantastic, dedicated owner, he’s made brilliant progress in strength, mobility, and overall comfort🐾

A big part of his recovery has come from the work done at home to reinforce what we do in the clinic. One key exercise has been slow lead walking, a simple but effective rehabilitation tool.

Because walking is a four-beat gait, slow lead walking helps to:

✅ Promote even weight bearing through each limb ✅ Encourage a slow, controlled gait
✅ Build stability around the knee joint✅ Reduce compensatory movement patterns
✅ Improve range of motion in the knee joint

💡Top tip
Try adding 5-10 minutes of slow lead walking to your daily routine to build strength, improve mobility, and support joint health🦮

For Dexter, this has meant more even weight-bearing in his hindlimbs and a significant improvement in the tightness and spasms through his back.

🧠Did you know…
Slow lead walking isn’t just for rehabilitation. It also supports dogs with arthritis, hip dysplasia, and even healthy dogs by boosting strength, balance, and coordination.

It’s been amazing to see Dexter’s progress over the past few months and we are back on track!

Golden Oldie Sasha comes in for physiotherapy following a cruciate ligament rupture, alongside arthritis. At 14 years old it was decided that surgery wasn’t the best option so Sasha started physiotherapy to help support her strength, mobility and joint comfort - especially important for senior dogs.
After an initial course of treatment she is now on a maintenance plan, her owners bring her in monthly for physiotherapy to help manage stiffness, maintain muscle strength, and keep her comfortable 🐾

Meet Bella, the gorgeous Golden Retriever🐾

Bella is one of our longest standing patients who has been having physiotherapy to help manage spondylosis in her spine and support her recovery following a cruciate ligament surgery a few years ago.

🔍Spondylosis is a type of arthritis in the spine, where bony changes can lead to stiffness and discomfort
🔍A cruciate ligament tear (similar to an ACL injury in people) and can cause pain and instability in the knee, often requiring surgery to stabilise or support the joint

Her treatment includes laser therapy to reduce inflammation and stimulate healing in the tissue, massage to relax tight muscles and improve their function, and stretching to improve flexibility and reduce stiffness.

Here is Bella looking very happy during her physiotherapy session while receiving laser therapy.

This is little Momo looking very cute while working hard to build strength in her hind limbs to support her knees due to bilateral patella luxation.

🔍 A Luxating Patella occurs when the patella (kneecap) slides out of its normal position, which can make the knee unstable or uncomfortable.

Strong muscles around the joints are key to improving stability and supporting comfortable movement💪

Zoe and I are pleased to announce that we have completed our Blue Paw Awards with The Veterinary Osteoarthritic Alliance!

This training has strengthened our knowledge in the pathophysiology and management of OA and included a final exam.

We are now able to offer increasingly thorough information for arthritic patients to help manage and prevent its progression.

As it stands there are only 23 Veterinary Physiotherapists that hold this award and we are very proud to wear ours proudly!
