๐Ÿšช๐Ÿพ Doorway Manners for Dogs

Does your dog charge through doors or gates before youโ€™re ready? Teaching doorway/gate manners keeps your dog safe and builds great teamwork.

What is it?
Your dog learns to offer or wait for a cue (like sit or down) before moving through a doorway or gate with you.

Why teach it?

โœ… Safety โ€“ prevents bolting into unsafe areas

โœ… Useful in heelwork to music and trick classes

โœ… Builds patience and impulse control

How to train it:

Pick a behavior (sit or down).

Practice away from doors/gates first โ€“ include distractions and duration.

Introduce the doorway/gate โ€“ cue the behavior at the door.

Once your dog is steady, you go through first, then recall your dog.

Mark + reward when they wait and respond correctly.

If things go wrong:

Lower the difficulty (criteria), simplify the environment, or revisit basics.

Break it down into smaller steps for success.

Level it up:

Increase distance between you and your dog.

Add multiple doors or gates.

Add a finishing behavior after recall.

Make it FUN!
Turn it into a game:

Carry a bag and collect items at each gate (empty bowls, water, food).

Practicing doorway manners creates calm, polite dogs who can handle real-life situations safely and happily.

๐Ÿพ Teaching Your Dog Recall โ€“ The Foundations

A strong recall (coming when called) is one of the most important skills your dog can learn. It keeps them safe, builds confidence, and allows more freedom in training and play.

Why recall matters:

โœ… Safety โ€“ call your dog away from danger

โœ… Foundation for agility, heelwork to music, and tricks

โœ… Strengthens the bond with your dog

๐Ÿ”ด Stage 1 โ€“ Condition the Recall Cue

Choose your recall word (e.g. โ€œHere!โ€ or โ€œCome!โ€).

Have 10 small treats ready.

Say your recall word and immediately give your dog a treat โ€“ within 2 seconds, no matter what theyโ€™re doing.

Do this 10 times a day for 10 days.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The goal: Your dog learns that the sound of the recall word = reward comes from you. This builds a reflex-like response, where hearing the word makes your dog want to turn back.

Tips for success:

Keep it short and fun!

Use high-value treats your dog loves.

Practice in calm environments first before adding distractions.

๐Ÿ”ด Stage 2 โ€“ Puppy Pyramids & Treat Triangles
This stage adds movement, distance, and focus.

How to do it:

Set up 3 cones (or markers) in a triangle.

Stand at the first cone with your dog.

Place a treat at the marker and say your recall cue (e.g. โ€œHere!โ€).

As your dog eats the treat, you run to the next marker.

Wait until they finish, then call again as they lift their headโ€”place another treat at that marker.

Repeat around the triangle.

๐Ÿ‘‰ What your dog learns:

The recall cue = run towards handler for reward.

To watch you closely to see where the fun happens.

To quickly re-engage with you after finishing a treat.

You can make this more challenging by:

Increasing the size of the triangle.

Adding mild distractions (toys, people).

Running faster to make it more exciting!

๐Ÿ’ก Pro tip: Always make recall the most rewarding part of your dogโ€™s day. If coming back to you always pays off, your dog will choose you over distractions!
